Early bridge construction and use in North Dakota was greatly influenced by the mid-nineteenth century industrial boom. These historic bridges, primarily metal, concrete, and wood, defied the challenging landscape and waterways. Their construction materials and methods left an engineering legacy and architecture that continues to be admired.

On the Edge of the Wind: Native Storytellers & the Land Opens April 27
Opening April 27 at the State Museum in Bismarck, On the Edge of the Wind: Native Storytellers & the Land is an exhibition that explores the connections between cultural practices, regional landscapes, and tribal oral narratives. Based on interviews with Native storytellers and knowledge keepers, this exhibition includes photographs, artifacts, and video recordings of elders recounting traditional stories. The featured storytellers help us better understand, respect, and value the land.

Join Us for National Junior Ranger Day at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center
Explorers of all ages are invited to pick up a free activity booklet and earn a Junior Ranger badge on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn. Follow the story of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and relive, study, and experience what it was like to be a member of the Corps of Discovery. This Lewis and Clark Trail Junior Ranger activity is a program of the National Park Service.

Documenting the Grand Forks Water Treatment Plant
The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) is a program administered by the National Park Service to document important structures in detail. Recently, the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission completed a record of the Grand Forks Water Treatment Plant using the HAER standards. The record includes a written history, photographs, sketch plans, and field records.
The project was funded through the Historic Preservation Fund, which is administered by the North Dakota State Historic Preservation Office, a part of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The record is now stored in the Library of Congress and a copy is also held at the North Dakota State Archives.

Former Governors’ Mansion Receives Donation
In 2022, the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors’ Mansion committed to supporting up to $18,000 toward the reproduction of the original 1884 wallpaper that hung in the mansion parlor. In February 2023, the Society presented a check to the agency for $17,294, the total cost of the reproduction by Wolff House Wallpapers of Mount Vernon, Ohio.

National History Day in North Dakota
National History Day in North Dakota will be held Thursday, April 28, at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum. National History Day engages students grades 6-12 in discovering and interpreting historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, and research papers related to an annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions.
