Easter Reveals the Children of God
One of my favorite things is taking care of babies. One time I was keeping Aisling (pronounced Ash-ling), a friend's baby, when another friend, James, came to see me. James is a very serious person who suffers neither nonsense nor fools easily, although our friendship should have caused me to wonder about that. His reaction to the baby left me amazed and speechless. He went gaga over the baby! He was smiling and cooing in a way I have never seen him be before or since. I am not sure whether this experience says more about babies or about what they do to us.
We are God's babies. God becomes a fool for us. God loves us and spares nothing to care for us. This is the message of Holy Week. Jesus holds nothing back. Now I am a godparent, not a parent, but it has taken a while for me to realize what it means for God to be our parent, or as Jesus said, Daddy. It means God loves and adores us more than we can imagine. God desires to give us not just what God has, but better. God wants our gifts to be greater than his, and our hardships to be less than his, and God spares nothing to accomplish this, except, perhaps, the limitation all parents have, children are their own people.
In this way there is no father in earth like our Father in heaven. Jesus is our brother, but because he so loves and reflects the image of the Father, he is like a mother to us. Tonight, Maundy Thursday, we see him wash our feet intimately, and then he offers his very self, his body, his blood, his spirit as our nourishment. In human experience mothers come closest to this amount of self-outpouring. The new life, the resurrection, Jesus desires for us, is that we learn loving others as God loves us is the most wonderful gift we can ever receive. When we do that we are grown up children of God.

Transformation
“Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains a single grain, but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:26)
Early in February the Lenten Roses began to bloom, reminding us that Ash Wednesday was drawing near. Now the blooms have pods with seeds ready to be distributed. As with a grain of wheat, each seed must have contact with the earth to reach its potential. For a seed to die means that it must be transformed to reveal the plant inside that will produce more Lenten Roses in due time. - Rosalie Jensen
