HOLY WEEK
Perhaps no other single death has been the subject of so many sermons, works of art, books, songs, poems, films, and theatrical plays as Jesus’. The labyrinth’s path is spiraling and twisting and turning. We realize there is only one way out. If we are immersed in the wonder of the Way, we can deal with whatever life brings us. The Way as seen as a labyrinthian maze causes us to be immersed in wonder. Do not take a short cut. In a journey of pain, suffering, and ultimate victory there are no shortcuts. The paradox of life’s labyrinthian journey is that while it is uniquely personal, it is also a communal journey. We never walk alone, and we never heal ourselves without healing the world. Love is the magnet that draws us deeper and deeper into the maze. Love is the power that guides us this far on our Lenten journey and only a great love of God and self energizes us to continue on the crooked path ahead. Notice an increase of love in our hearts throughout the journey. Finally, having intentionally traveled the forty days in the complicated passageways of the Lenten labyrinth, having strived to renew ourselves, it is time now to step out and announce the first day of a new era and a new creation. Like Irving Berlin’s famous Easter song says: Put on your Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it and confidently step into the wonder-filled Easter Parade of Life.
