Never heard of Mandy Thursday? Read on...

If your feet weren’t so stinky after a ride on Thursday, maybe I’d wash them! Kidding. Jesus would wash them regardless of how they smelled (read below). What a great day to kick off a new Believers on Mountain Bike season - Maundy Thursday. When I lived in Minnesota our church had four services - Palm Sunday to kick off Holy week, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. I haven’t found many churches in Colorado that hold a Maundy Thursday service. Maundy Thursday commemorates three things:
  1. Jesus washes the feet of apostles. Jesus didn’t care how stinky the feet of the apostles were. Usually washing feet was reserved for a servant. Why wash feet - well people walked around barefoot or with sandals, and when they ate a communal dinner they were often seated at a low table, with feet exposed.. The streets weren’t exactly clean - they had horse, donkey, ox, and other poo on the streets, not to mention there wasn’t modern plumbing like we have today. Needless to say, instead of tracking that filth into someone’s home, or having those stinky, filthy feet in your neighbor’s face while you date, feet were washed to prepare for the communal dinner. Jesus was showing to the others that he was that servant. He was the servant that would lay down his life for all of us just a few days later so that we may be reconciled to God. (See John 13). In many respects, Jesus is cleaning them, spiritually and showing them the act of forgiveness.
  2. The last supper. Maundy Thursday also commemorates the last supper. During the last supper, “Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’ (See Matthew 26:26-29) If hot dogs are grilling Thursday night, remember the Lord’s Supper as you eat that dog, and drink water, electrolytes or recovery from your water bottle or hydration pack.
  3. Jesus’ betrayal by Judas. The final aspect of Maundy Thursday is that it was when Jesus was betrayed by Judas. This isn’t the best memory - betrayal of Jesus - but it had to happen to get to Easter. Maundy Thursday leads to Good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified. That alone is a sad event, until we find out that Jesus arose Easter morning. He conquered sin, and death. He sacrificed himself so that we may have eternal life with God if we believe in Him.
Hope everyone has an amazing Holy week and reflects on what Jesus did for us and the mercy and grace he has shown us and this broken world. Through His sacrifice, we live.
