|
Some celebrities have more than champagne problems right now. They’re being sued for promoting FTX. A class action suit accuses them of promoting the sale of unregistered securities. Taylor Swift was reportedly one of the only celebrities who saw trouble when it walked in. She was skeptical of the wildest dreams promised by the crypto exchange. She looked in the mirrorball and did her due diligence by asking FTX if the crypto tokens were not unregistered securities. Reports say she was considering a sponsorship deal, but she decided to shake it off because of the unregistered securities concern.

OSC’s statement of priorities

The OSC published its 2023-2024 Statement of Priorities. It sets out four strategic goals the OSC will focus on this fiscal year, beyond core regulatory operations:
- Building trust and fairness in Ontario’s capital markets.
- Strengthening investor safeguards.
- Adapting regulation to align with innovation and evolving markets.
- Enabling the organization to deliver effective regulation.
The OSC may take on additional priorities or reprioritize initiatives during the year in response to emerging issues and changing market conditions.

Regulatory Updates & Initiatives
|
Here are some recent developments and publications:
- The Capital Markets Tribunal introduced plain language “decisions in brief.”
- Members of New Self-Regulatory Organization of Canada (New SRO) approved the new name of the organization to Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). The name still requires approval by the provincial and territorial security regulators. New SRO hopes to use the new name around June 1. Members will have until December 31, 2024, to make all necessary updates.
- The CSA and the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators (CCIR) published changes to enhance total cost reporting (TCR) disclosure for investment funds and individual segregated fund contracts (Segregated Funds).
- Canadian securities regulators published an annual activities report on the oversight of SROs and investor protection funds.
- The CSA announced certain unregistered crypto asset trading platforms have filed an enhanced pre-registration undertaking with their principal regulator following the publication of CSA Staff Notice 21-332.
- The CSA congratulated Charles-Antoine St-Jean on his appointment as the first-ever Chair of the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board of Canada (CSSB).

New SRO is publishing for public comment proposed amendments to New SRO’s Universal Market Integrity Rules and Investment Dealer and Partially Consolidated Rules — collectively, the Proposed Amendments. This is regarding the investment industry’s move from a trade date plus two business days settlement cycle to a trade date plus one business day settlement cycle.
