more VUCA world for the music theatre…
Dear friends and followers and fanatics and artists and agents,
We are CALLING FOR APPLICATIONS again until JUNE 30th – if you are in a hurry, you can just skip the "blah" and directly submit your hot, innovative and inspiring project HERE…
If you prefer some more background, relax and read on even if things are much quicker today than they have in recent years… MTNow competition again? Three years have passed already? WRONG! We have changed the rhythm to a biannual pattern for the sake of freshness and the ability to tour of winning productions.
And we have also adapted to the complexity of newly developed works and again welcome to the competition 'ALL FORMS of performative works that have music in their core structure' – be it a good old staged work, a hybrid site-specific presentation or some digital interactive online stuff. We just distinguish them by umbrella categories – making it easier for the jury to tell apples and oranges apart and deal with the ambiguity of the genre.
Also the International Theatre Institute is cooperating once more, as is the wonderful O. Festival for Opera. Music. Theatre.
Our JURY is also this time made up of five renowned professionals from around the globe and we are looking forward to share incoming applications with international partners, who declared their serious interest to invite a production – hard to sell the ‚cat in the bag‘ and let festivals promise to invite a work that they do not know and have no idea about the size or necessary resources yet…

You just want to find a way against the volatility of performing arts without the uncertainty of a competition? You can be helped! MTNow offers the possibility to integrate your production for free to the MTNow ARCHIVE that is kept alive by the ITI Media Library for Dance and Theatre in Berlin.

We know that MONEY is always a topic to discuss and financial resources are distributed unevenly throughout the world. Therefore participants can apply for a free submission in case there are strong financial or structural reasons that would prevent a work from being submitted. Reasons could range from exorbitant exchange rates (please state example), comparable low per head income of country (please specify) or other structural reasons.

Worldwide Competition for
Music Theatre and new Opera

Music Theatre NOW is once more calling creators from all over the world to submit daring and groundbreaking forms of professionally produced new works – from new opera to interactive audio-spatial experience, from staged concert to hybrid streaming aesthetics, the prestigious international award honours the most innovative projects from the most vibrant interdisciplinary art form of the present time.
The Music Theatre NOW Network in cooperation with the International Theatre Institute calls creators from all over the world to submit first productions of new works that premiered between July 2021 and June 2023 to the only international competition for music theatre and new opera.
Prizewinners will be invited to festivals and venues from partners of our network, where they will be able to present their work in various forms. This promotion of new music theatre has been a launchpad for several successful international careers.

Open to all forms
The number of innovative, hybrid and digital music theatre projects has multiplied in recent years and in order to acknowledge this development of the genre, the competition is of course open to all forms of multi- and intermedia presentations – including interactive online works or live audio experiences – as long as they integrate a performative aspect – and of course staged performances.
We are looking forward to your explorations of new aesthetics that push boundaries and tackle contemporary issues.
Our idea of music theatre is as wide as possible and encourages interdisciplinary submissions where music plays a dominant role from all parts of the world to take part – independently from the musical and theatrical tradition, their form of staging or presentation and their means of professional production.
Internationally renowned jury
A five-member internationally renowned jury will select a total of at least 6 prizewinning works that are exemplary in terms of the contemporary developments in music theatre: Sarah CRABTREE (London/UK), Mena Mark HANNA (Charleston/USA), Tisa HO (Hongkong/HKSAR), Marlene LE ROUX (Cape Town/South Africa), Andrea Caruso SATURNINO (Sao Paulo/Brazil).
