The Community Wellbeing Grant Program

Alberta Blue Cross wants to ensure that communities across Alberta have the resources they need to create healthy, vibrant lives—and that the people making that happen are properly recognized. That’s why we’re introducing a new program this year in recognition of our 75th anniversary. We want to celebrate our legacy of giving back to the communities we serve

The Community Wellbeing grant program celebrates our province’s exceptional volunteers by giving out awards of $1000 each, plus another $1000 to the charitable organization they volunteer with. This program rewards people who are making a difference in the health and wellness of Albertans. Whether that’s volunteering with a senior’s center, an arts council or a children’s sports league, we want to invest in the people who invest in community.

Eligible Volunteers:

  • Volunteers for an Alberta-based non-profit, charitable or community-based organization.
  • Is an Alberta resident 18 years of age or over.
  • Provides service in a voluntary capacity and does not receive compensation from the organization for their involvement.
Please note that all nominations must be made by the organization the nominee volunteers with. Volunteers cannot apply for the Community Wellbeing grant program themselves. The volunteer must accept the nomination to be eligible.

Eligible Organizations:
  • senior's associations,
  • community groups,
  • agricultural societies,
  • school councils,
  • arts or culture groups,
  • children’s activity organizations, and
  • amateur sports teams.
The following types of organizations are not eligible:
  • animal welfare charities,
  • private clubs,
  • political parties, and
  • religious institutions (unless in the context of providing services to the community at large).
Eligible organizations can nominate one of their volunteers for a Community Wellbeing grant. If your organization’s volunteer is selected, then your organization will receive a matching donation of $1000.

Lethbridge Candidates Speak on Non-profit issues

As the provincial election looms ever closer, concerns about funding and support take centre stage for the nonprofit sector. May 4, Volunteer Lethbridge, the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations and the Provincial NonProfit Get Out the Vote campaign hosted a non-partisan forum for the sector to hear from candidates. About 100 people attended and heard from Lethbridge West candidates Shannon Phillips and Cheryl Seaborn, and Lethbridge East Candidates Nathan Neudorf and Rob Miyashiro. The purpose of this campaign is to ensure citizens understand each candidate's views and plans for the nonprofit sector before heading to the polls. The campaign has also allowed community nonprofit leaders across the province to speak with a unified voice. The election is May 29, with advance voting May 23-27.

LET'S IMAGINE PODCAST - How the lack of core funding is impacting 2SLGBTQI+ Organizations

The lack of core funding has a dramatic impact on nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve. Not being able to count on reliable funding impacts organizational health, capacity and resilience, which in turn negatively impacts the quality of services organizations can offer their community, but also the employment conditions of nonprofit workers, and the long-term sustainability of their organizations. This week on the podcast we’re joined by Tyler Boyce, Executive Director of The Enchanté Network, to discuss this crucial issue, from a 2SLGBTQI+ community perspective.

Target Hunger

Target Hunger is the annual food drive done every June, where volunteers collect donations from each household in town, requesting community members to donate the most wanted food items for our local food banks.

The Target Hunger Organizing Committee is hoping to involve as many citizens of Lethbridge in this initiative, and is hoping to connect with local community groups to encourage support for the project. We will be looking for help from community organizations to promote the City Wide Food Drive to their membership, and will also be looking for volunteers to help sort all of the food we collect on the day of the event. Whether your group is able to be actively involved in the food drive or willing to help us to get the word out, we can use your help!

Are you a youth group or service club leader? Or maybe you just want to help stop hunger in our community? Maybe you’re a business owner that’s looking for a way to give back? Whatever your circumstance is, we’re looking for YOU to be a part of the annual Target Hunger food drive that takes place on the second Saturday of June.
