For the 2023 Independent New York fair, Night Gallery is thrilled to present new work by Christine Wang and Daniel Tyree Gaitor-Lomack, two artists who reinvigorate found materials to construct new possibilities. For Wang, these materials are digital: The painter translates memes and other popular internet imagery into virtuosically rendered canvases. Her pixelated compositions capture the iconically contemporary while evoking timeless masterpieces.
Gaitor-Lomack makes intricate assemblages from found objects. Each component either carries a personal connection to the artist or is imbued with a spiritual energy that is greater than their material existence. These assemblages suggest otherworldly beings whose power radiates from the surprising combinations of their diverse parts. Wang’s work casts its own kind of spell, bringing humor into the white cube by transforming ephemeral online jokes into enduring, finely rendered oil paintings.
