‘Correct’ Practice Makes Perfect
Dear Parents/Carers
At the end of this academic year it will not only be year 11 sitting exams. All students in years 7-10 will also sit end of year exams.
We all know that when we want to get good at something we need to practice. It’s this repetition that leads to us moving from novice to expert in anything that we do – learning is no different.
I am sure you share my desire for all John Hanson students, your children, to leave John Hanson after 5 years with the best qualifications as possible and having been as successful as possible in their educational journey. This is not the preserve of year 11, but starts the minute they walk through the door in year 7.
This week’s assemblies have all been about reminding students that its not just the practice (revision) that counts, but the way in which they do it. Not spending hours reading and highlighting their work, but condensing what they have learnt and transforming it via mind maps and flash cards into a form that they can memorise.
Two tutor time sessions this term have also been given over to revision. Each week, students will spend time on both the mechanics of revision and applying them to the subjects they are studying.
Whether it be a year 11 student walking in to a GCSE examination or a year 7 student taking their first secondary school end of year exam, I want all students to have the tools and confidence to perform at their very best because they know how to practice correctly.
Enjoy the weekend with your children.
Regards

We are delighted to announce that four of our students have been selected by Young Writers to have their work published in the “Integer-Awesome Tales” publication. This creative writing competition was open to all students aged 11-18 and asked them to write a short story inspired by numbers. The work all four girls produced was outstanding and they clearly have a passion for creative writing.
The publication will be published early June containing all the selected students work.

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.
We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.
This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.
Important EDI events over the next week:
Eid is 21st April. Eid-ul-Fitr.
Words you might not know:
Eid-ul-Fitr: means the festival of breaking the fast. It marks the end of the month of Ramadan. During this time Muslims give thanks to God for giving them the strength to fast for a whole month. Muslims celebrate by wearing their best clothes, decorating their homes and enjoying time with their family. They eat special foods and attend the mosque for a special sermon from the Imam. For some, they celebrate the whole day and therefore do not go to school or work.
Please encourage your son/daughter to use their SCHOOL EMAIL for work rather than their own private email. This is important for safeguarding and also some of our messages for students are being sent to school email addresses.
