Welcome to the new Port Book and Newsletter, where we will pass along some friendly book-related vibes every month. There will always be more to talk about then we can actually fit! Great stuff comes out in the spring… flowers, warmer weather, and a lot of books that we're excited about. First things first: We are only a few days away from Independent Bookstore Day, and here is some of what you can look forward to:

  • 10% storewide for the 10th anniversary of Independent bookstore day
  • 20% off featured books from selected independent presses: Copper Canyon Press, Empty Bowl Press, Sasquatch Books, University of Washington Press, University of Oregon Press, and Milkweed Editions
  • Find the Golden Ticket hiding in our store and win 12 audiobooks through our partner Libro.fm. That's a year's worth of audiobooks! But there's only ONE ticket...

Come spend a few minutes catching up with us. We're glad you're here and hope to see you in the store soon. As you are reading this and future newsletters we would love to know if there is anything you would like to hear from us on a somewhat regular basis.

A Fever in the Heartland cover
A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them
Did you know that Washington And Oregon were at one time hotbeds of KKK Activity in the 1920's? History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes. You wonder how the legacy of the past remains to haunt us today. (Alan)

With narrative elan, Egan gives us a riveting saga of how a predatory con man became one of the most powerful people in 1920s America, Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, with a plan to rule the country—and how a grisly murder of a woman brought him down." (Erik Larson)

Educational and Fun Games

We are always on the lookout for games that are educational and fun, and Headu has created the perfect line for this!

Each game consists of educational activities to have your child engage their mind and use basic motor skills, from ages 1-3 and up. Here are three of our favorites, but we have so many in stock.

Writing Lab Montessori

Learn to Read and Write in 3 ways. Children will put word puzzles together in the little houses, form words using the moveable letters, then practise writing them out with the pen. This is inspired by the Montessori three-period method to consolidate reading and writing practice in a fun and engaging way! (Ages 3-6).

Theatre Acting School

With scripts simplified for children, the stories are endless with this mini theater. Learning how to animate characters, recognize expressions and emotions and developing imagination, see where each prompt takes you. (Ages 4-8).

First Test: Book 1 of the Protector of the Small Quartet

Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors. Her medieval fantasy novels were some of the first to really grab my imagination as a young person and they fueled my burgeoning passion for books. If you like a determined main character who cannot stand a bully, a bit of magic, some animal friends, and a realist base for a fantasy world, please try this wonderful book!

First Test is book one in the Protector of the Small Quartet and the start of the third series set in the realm of Tortall. You do not have to start with the first book in the first series for this world to make sense and capture your imagination. However, characters from the previous series do make an appearance as side characters who have become legends in their own right. If you do enjoy this book, please consider trying all the rest! (Helena)
