Biweekly Community Update

April 25th, 2023
Happy Tuesday!

One of the most important gifts we can give, both to ourselves and to others, is the gift of attention. Taking the time to truly engage, to listen and understand has the ability to change the world, especially when we are listening to children.

Empowering children is one of the most important tenets of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and in many cases, serves as the backbone for Children’s Day, an international holiday commemorating children’s rights.

We are so lucky to have such amazing and talented leaders who are seeding this tradition here on Lopez and your constant support  empowers them.

In the Spotlight
When Karina Cerda and Cecy Martinez proposed last year’s Children’s Day celebration at one of the Voices and Visions meetings, we didn’t know it then, but it would be exactly what our little island needed: a space to come together to celebrate and play as a community.

“After so much isolation, today felt like there was hope of returning to normal,” said one parent after last year’s event.

It was a complete hit, but not only because we'd all be couped up from COVID.

Kids said things like, "Can we do this again next weekend?" and "When's the next one?"

While Children’s Day is celebrated in more than 90 countries around the globe, it has yet to gain much recognition in the U.S. But here on Lopez, leaders from the Spanish speaking community are working hard to share and celebrate their traditions with the entire island.
Some 120 children and family members convened last year. This year, leaders are expecting nearly double that. They are again planning for FREE pizza and juice for all children 0-18 and they’ve prepared several outdoor games and activities such as giant lawn checkers, fútbol volley, face painting, balloon animals, piñatas and more.

But this year, they are also adding a new layer: sharing and celebrating Mexican heritage through the education and sale of traditional foods, (tamales, tostadas, flautas, mole and pozole) and crafts (silver jewelry, leather bags, traditional clothing and Mexican embroidery).

Join us in what will certainly be a day to remember.  We can’t wait to see you there.

The event is scheduled for April 30th from 12-3PM at the Community Center and is open to everyone.

While RSVP is not necessary, leaders are asking that you confirm your attendance so they can calculate the food accordingly. Please click on the link below to let them know you are coming.
I'll be there!
