April 22: Hey, what’s up, hello! It’s finally ✨CHATTERDAY!✨

This newsletter is what you get when you combine the powers of two chronically online staffers who love to chat, believe in the power of the meme and had juuust enough time on our hands to convince our boss to let us make this a reality.

We'll be in your inbox each weekend with stuff to do, our thoughts on the news (and the week in general), things to try, read and watch — and whatever else life brings us.

This is a long one, just to show you what we've got.

Thanks for being here!

Quote of the week
"And that raccoon defecated in my hat on the way out of the bus... there's something cynical about raccoons in town.

— Iowa Sen. Bill Dotzler, D-Waterloo.

🖊️Rockets aren't the only thing exploding recently. Apparently, Iowa's raccoon population is, too. A bill to address the multitude of mischievous mammals is awaiting Gov. Kim Reynolds' signature.
  • The bill would let residents in rural areas capture or kill skunks, opossums or raccoons that are a nuisance.
  • Dotzler voiced his support for the legislation during debate in the Senate, telling lawmakers about the critter that lay waste to his RAGBRAI team's bus, eating their food and ultimately defecating in his hat.

this piece from Harvest Public Media.
An ethanol plant is within sight of Jeff Reints' farm in Shell Rock. Reints says the ethanol market is "fantastic" for his corn. What’s not fantastic is the idea of a pipeline running through his farm.

"It is a little awkward," he said, "but you have to stand for something. We got to stand for our rights of property ownership."

He's one of many farmers struggling with how to answer "the carbon question."

How High We Go In the Dark
Sequoia Nagamatsu's best-selling book and All Iowa Reads adult selection for 2023 begins in the year 2030 when thawing permafrost — the result of global warming — allows the release of a long-dormant ancient virus. The resulting pandemic spreads first among children and then mutates to affect adults as well.
