PPTA UPDATE

As you are all aware PPTA members are currently in negotiations with the government regarding our next Secondary School's Collective Agreement. Unfortunately these negotiations have not gone as we all would have liked which has already resulted in industrial action.
The negotiations are ongoing however we are yet to reach a resolution. Unfortunately, what has been offered to this point does not meet all of what we believe is needed to better meet the needs of our ākonga. As a result, as PPTA members, we have made the difficult decision to continue with further industrial action.

Please find below the details. We are hopeful a resolution will be reached so we can avoid having to follow through with these actions.

Rostering home -

Please find one of the actions we will be undertaking is the Rostering home of students in reeanga groups. When rostered home, your tamaiti can continue work on already assigned mahi as there will be no special mahi prepared and no online classes on they day they are rostered off.  This action will commence on Thursday of next week (Week 2) with our Tau 11 being the first reeanga. Please find below a table outlining when each reeanga is scheduled to be rostered home.

This is the rostering home plan:

Rolling Strike Action -

Secondary Schools throughout Aotearoa will also undertake further strikes on a rolling basis, with Waikato schools scheduled to strike for one day on Thursday 11th May.  This will mean our kura will be closed for instruction on that day.

As you can imagine e te whaanau, it has been extremely difficult for all of our PPTA members at our Wharekura to undertake such actions.  However we are determined to improve the conditions and, therefore, outcomes for our uri and believe this will be achieved if we are granted what we have asked for with the new collective agreement.

Finally, I want to acknowledge you all for your ongoing support and understanding at these really challenging times.  We know such actions pose some difficulties for you all and we are very grateful for all of the sacrifices you are all making at this time.

Ko te kotahi te kaakaho, ka whati. Ki te kapuia, e kore e whati!

E mihi nui ana,
Romana Rolleston

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Kia ora e te whānau.
Our daily uniform is another way of our tauira representing who we are at Taiātea as well as our tauira taking pride in what we present ourselves in everyday.

If tauira do not have the correct uniform for certain reasons then these are the following steps:
1: A pānui with the reason must be sent from home with the tauira signed and dated by the parent/caregiver
2: The panui must be handed into the tari in order for us to process a uniform pass for the day.
3: If the tauira does not have a panui from home than that will be written into kamar as an incorrect uniform and they will also have the incorrect item confiscated from them for the day. They can pick the item back up after kura.

MAHINGA WHEAKO - TAU 12-13
(WORK EXPERIENCE)
8/9 JUNE 2023

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou,

In Years 12 and 13 ākonga move outside of the Wharekura into the real world and learn through Mahinga Wheako (Work Experience). The main purpose of this kaupapa is for tauira to spend two days in a work environment they are wanting to go into when they leave kura. This is a chance for them to see what the world of work is like and to help them get the feel for that mahi.

This year Tau 12/13 are expected to arrange a Mahinga Wheako workplace for 2 days 8th/9th June. If a student is participating in the WINTEC Trades Academy or other course on these days, they will only need to spend the one other day at a workplace. Kaiarahi will work with ākonga to help them to arrange their work placements, but if whanau are able to help with ideas or contacts, that will be helpful. Also if anyone is keen to have an ākonga come to their work place to work alongside them for 2 days, please contact me asap so I can help to arrange this.

They will need to wear the appropriate clothing for the workplace as discussed with their mentor/workplace. While neither the Kaiako nor other Wharekura personnel are present with the ākonga at these sites, the kura will be actively involved through direct contact with the mentor/workplace and a kaiako will visit them on site over the two days. On these 2 days ākonga should go straight to the workplace. They do not need to come to Wharekura. To get to these work sites, they may walk or travel in personal vehicles or via public transportation. Parental/Guardian assistance may be needed to ensure your child has transport to their Mahinga Wheako. This is different from traditional Wharekura settings where, during the Wharekura day, ākonga stay within the Wharekura grounds or travel only on planned field trips. If they are going to be absent from the workplace, both the mentor and the kura must be informed.

To effect this kind of education, the Wharekura has strict processes to be followed. The Agreement Forms must be fully completed before your child can go on to their Mahinga Wheako, and signed by the Mentor, Whanau, Kaiako and student. If you have any further concerns or pātai please call the Wharekura and ask to speak with me or email me.

HE TĀRINGA, HE KARU
FILM SCREEN TO CELEBRATE AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

A group of our tauira were invited to attend the screening of a short film to celebrate AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH. We attended the hui this afternoon to tautoko this kaupapa and celebrate Tahuaroa's journey.

A little bit about Tahuroa....

Ko Tahuaroa Matatu Cherrington Ohia toku ingoa.
He uri tēnei nō Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Hine me Ngāpuhi hoki.
I am currently working at Māoriland as a rangatahi filmmaker.

My Project
My short film is called He Karu He Taringa (Eyes and Ears). It's a story about how a takiwātanga (autistic) child hears and sees the world. I am takiwātanga and I'm also the writer and director of He Karu, He Taringa.

Why is my story important?
This story is important because it is an experience that me and my whānau have been through. It took 6 months of me and my mother being shoved away by doctors and other health professionals before we finally found out my diagnosis. After this the doctor told my mother I wouldn’t accomplish any of the goals I had...and they were wrong. I've accomplished my goals so far and now I’m living an independent life as a creative artist.

This is why we want more support for whānau who are dealing with takiwātanga to have proper help and treatment from health professionals. I want the message in this film to be heard, in order to spread awareness around takiwātanga. People need to start treating takiwātanga as a gift not a disease.

If you would like to know anything about autism please click on the logo below.

KURA WAITI

This program is run by Te Toki Voyaging Trust in partnership with the Waikato Regional Council. We have 15 tauira from our Wharekura and 11 other Kura Kaupapa and Wharekura participating on this program . The program began last year for our Level 2 roopu and this year for our Level 1 roopu.

The program has been designed to develop student learning in environmental education and Kura Waiti has been adapted and designed around our local awa, moana (waterways) and all resources connected to our awa and moana.

Each roopu spend one day a term off site, participating in planned activities. The dates for each roopu are:

Level 1     15 May (Monday), 7 August (Monday), 20 October (Friday)
Level 2:    24 May (Wednesday), 16 August (Wednesday), 2 November (Thursday).
POITARAWHITI

Panikoti Poitarawhiti:

Can all our Netball players from last year please check at home whether you ha e a Netball dress and, if you do, please return it asap to the tari or direct to Matua Romana. Unfortunately we have a number of unreturned dresses. If they are not returned we will not be able to provide a playing uniform for all of our teams.

E mihi ana,

 Tripartite Agreement

Kia ora e te whānau,

Term 1 has flown by, and what a term it was! Our programmes showcase saw 32 young people show off their new skills to over 100 friend and whānau members. We are so proud of all our rangatahi have achieved and can't wait to do it all again this term with our new cohort.

This is where you come in: we still have quite a few spaces left for our programmes and we wondering if you have any tauira that might want to give it a go! If you know any rangatahi aged 12-18 who might be interested in photography, singing, or barista click the "sign up" button below.

We are also running $5 open hip hop classes every Friday from 3:30-4:45pm; an open class is a great opportunity for young people to give dance a go without feeling the pressure to commit to a 9 weeks programme.

AND THAT'S ALL, FOLKS!

Lots of spaces to fill whānau - let's get our rangatahi in the door! For more information on what's covered in each programme, check out our Programmes page on our website, otherwise if you have any questions, queries, or concerns, feel free to send them my way!
