Apprentices and trainees achieve high earnings and employment, new report finds

Young Australians who have completed an apprenticeship/traineeship or postgraduate qualifications report stronger employment outcomes, earnings and job satisfaction than their peers, an Ai Group report has found.

The Ai Group Centre for Education and Training’s latest report, Connecting the dots: Exploring young Australians’ pathways from education and training into work, used survey data from the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Youth (LSAY), which followed a cohort of young Australians from age 15 to 25.

Among the sample, the strongest employment outcomes, earnings and job satisfaction were among those who had completed an apprenticeship/traineeship or postgraduate qualifications.

Apprentice/trainee qualified workers had the highest average weekly wages at age 25, although they also worked the most hours.

Apprentice/trainee paths also produced the highest level of employment (96%) of all the pathways.

Worker seriously injured from residential building fall

A 28-year-old worker sustained serious injuries when he fell approximately three metres through a stair void to the concrete floor.

SafeWork NSW reports that the worker was installing insulation batts on the third level of a residential construction site when he fell through the void.

Each year in NSW there are many incidents where workers have been killed or seriously injured from falls from heights. Many of these involve falling from unprotected edges or through penetrations.

Visit the SafeWork NSW working safely at heights in construction web page to access a range of resources about how to work safely on roofs and around voids.

Free workshops on supervising apprentices and trainees

Training Services NSW offers free Supervising Your Apprentice or Trainee Workshops for employers and supervisors.

These workshops are ideal for those directly supervising apprentices or trainees (or thinking about employing one). They provide a four-hour lesson in skills, such as mentoring, working with different generations in the workplace, personality and learning styles, what you need to know about competency based training and the apprenticeship and traineeship system.

They also explain what employers should expect from the training provider, including negotiating training that works for you and your business, and what to consider in signing off on-the-job competency,

Trade taster programs to give students a glimpse of future careers

Throughout May and June there will be trade taster programs running in Sydney, between Moorebank and Penrith and out to Richmond.

Selected schools are offering a two-day trade taster program for up to 15  Year 9-12 students, with the focus on year 10.

Industry involvement is actively encouraged in these programs so that students get an immersive and practical experience, and are made aware of local industry, careers and pathways.

If industry and employers have approximately 45 minutes to spare, their involvement can really make a difference.

The program is run by the Training Services NSW Regional Industry Education Partnerships, and is one of many that helps connect industry to schools.

Please fill in this form to register your interest.
