Hello Bluegrass Lovers!

The Idaho Bluegrass Association (IBA) had a great winter! Spring and summer 2023  are shaping up to be even better! Check out the activities below, get updates by signing up for the IBA mailing list, and help support bluegrass in Idaho.

SpringGrass – May 29, 11 am-8 pm
Outdoors, Family-Friendly, and Free!!

Because our Winterfest event in February was so successful, we're sponsoring a free SpringGrass event featuring 9 bands at Green Acres Food Truck Park. Green Acres, a delightful outdoor venue tucked away on the Boise Greenbelt, offers local food, dessert, drinks, and music spring through fall (Green Acres Food Truck Park (greenacresboise.com).  So come on out, bring a blanket and lawn chairs, and enjoy a full day of bluegrass music, food, drinks, and sun!  The music is free; food and drinks are for sale by local vendors. No tickets, just show up! We hope you'll stop by our IBA booth to become a member or to learn about other events and activities we sponsor.

Idaho Bluegrass & Banjo Camp June 8-11

The IBA has partnered with Idaho Bluegrass Camp, Inc. to bring you the Idaho Bluegrass and Banjo Camp in 2023.

We still have openings for banjo (3-finger), guitar, mandolin, and fiddle students. Also, scholarships (50% discount) for 18 and under are still available. It’s not too late to sign up at  Idaho Bluegrass & Banjo Camp: idahobluegrasscamp.org

From June 8th through June 11th, 2023, we'll be in Weiser, Idaho, at the site of the National Oldtime Fiddlers' Festival and Contest. The camp includes nationally recognized instructors: Bennett Sullivan (banjo), Jason Homey (banjo), Pete (Dr. Banjo) Wernick, Chris Coole (clawhammer), Chris Jones (guitar), Andy Hatfield (guitar), Ellie Hakanson (fiddle), Megan Lynch Chowning (fiddle), Sharon Gilchrist (mandolin), and Maddie Witler (mandolin).  To see more about these instructors and how to register:  Idaho Bluegrass & Banjo Camp (idahobluegrasscamp.org)

Community Bulletin Board and IBA Website

I’ve heard lots of great feedback from folks on the Bluegrass Community Bulletin Board.  Big thank you to Petra Schwarthoff, IBA Board Member and Webmaster, for putting the bulletin board together! The bulletin, which lists bluegrass happenings in the Treasure Valley and beyond, is emailed to IBA members about every 2 week and also is on our website. As a "community" bulletin board, we need your help to fill out the calendar! Please email us about upcoming events at: idahobluegrassassociation@gmail.com

Attention Bluegrass Bands--Our website has a page that lists bluegrass bands with contact information.  If you are on this page, please review and update as necessary.  If you are interested in being listed, please send us an email.
 In Memory of

Vivian Williams--fiddler, composer, recording artist, and writer--who passed away on January 6, 2023, at the age of 84. Vivian was a regular at Weiser during “fiddle week” and a legend in bluegrass and folk music. Gary Eller summed it up well, “Vivian was one of a kind in many, many ways.  A high impact person.  We were privileged to serve her mint juleps when she stopped by Banjo Hell West.”  The link below provides a great summary of an amazing life:  https://bluegrasstoday.com/vivian-williams-passes

In Closing

One of my favorite musicians stated it best:

"It's our duty to allow Bluegrass music to grow and flourish, and at the same time, retain the most important part of it. And that is the essence of the sound of real Bluegrass music." - Tony Rice

Best
