SPOTLIGHT ON...

Jessica Reisinger
Amy Loeffler | Senior Science Communicator, IAB

Jessica Reisinger has long believed in the power of “Yes.” Yes, to taking on new challenges, yes to moving to a new city without an established support network, and yes to going down unexpected paths. It’s gotten her to where she is today, which is currently pursuing a medical degree through the consortium of universities that include the five northwestern states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho and the University of Washington School of Medicine, collectively known as the WWAMI program.

As an undergraduate at the University of Alaska Anchorage she majored in chemistry graduating magna cum laude and was selected as the spring 2021 commencement speaker for her class (also an experience she owes to the power of “yes”). She’s also served as a scribe in emergency medicine where she was exposed to patients who faced numerous barriers to accessing care as survivors of sexual assault.  Among her myriad accomplishments, Reisinger was also crowned Miss Alaska in 2022 and chose to shine a light on the lack of sexual assault response resources in the state of Alaska. Through her association with the Miss America Organization she was able to leverage her unique platform as Miss Alaska with her medical background to craft tangible outreach initiatives with sexual assault survivors in mind. Reisinger was able to brainstorm ideas for improving access to sexual assault response resources with state legislators including Alaska’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anne Zink.

She is now in her second year of medical school and hopes to pursue emergency medicine. Reisinger told Alaska Public Media in Anchorage in 2021, “In the ER I felt like I was constantly learning, I felt like the high-paced environment was kinda suited for me.”

Her commencement speech at UAA focused on the interconnectedness of personal stories and how to serve as a positive force for one another. If Reisinger’s career thus far is any indication, she’s well on her way to being the positive force in people’s lives that she’ll encounter on a daily basis as a medical doctor, however briefly.
