Webinar on community-based interventions to control vector-borne diseases

The webinar "Community-Based Interventions to Control Vector-Borne Diseases" presented concrete field actions. The key messages were the same in both cases: sustainable and effective community-based interventions should consider different critical elements such as resources, political context, community and stakeholder participation, multi-sectoral involvement and collaboration.

WEST NILE, SINDBIS AND USUTU VIRUSES: EVIDENCE OF CIRCULATION IN MOSQUITOES AND HORSES IN TUNISIA
In Tunisia, surveillance of the West Nile virus (WNV) is based solely on the surveillance of human neuroinvasive infections and no study has reported mosquito-borne viruses (MBVs), nor has there been any thorough serological investigation of anti-MBV antibodies in horses. This study therefore sought to investigate the presence of MBVs in Tunisia.

RAPID RISK ASSESSMENT TECHNICAL GUIDELINES FOR ANIMAL HEALTH
These technical guidelines on rapid risk assessment provide a simple and practical tool that assists decision-makers in veterinary departments in conducting qualitative rapid risk assessments on the emergence, incursion and/or spread of animal health events caused by infectious diseases.

EVOLUTION AND EMERGENCE OF MOSQUITO-BORNE VIRUSES OF MEDICAL IMPORTANCE: TOWARDS A ROUTINE METAGENOMIC SURVEILLANCE APPROACH
The article describes the different ecological scenarios that can lead to the emergence of viral diseases, and the virus adaptation process required for the establishment of a new transmission cycle. The study also highlights the interest of using next-generation sequencing and computational methods for the discovery and genomic surveillance of mosquito-borne viruses in their ecosystems.
EPIDEMIOLOGY, ISOLATION, AND GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF TOSCANA VIRUS IN ALGERIAN PATIENTS DISPLAYING INFECTION, 2016-2018
This article reports on a study conducted in Algeria that investigated cases of of neuro-invasive Toscana virus (TOSV) infection in patients and that led to the first isolation of TOSV strain from human samples in North Africa. The study provides valuable information about the prevalence and characteristics of Toscana virus infections in Algeria.
