Dear friends and colleagues,

Our 2023 African Diaspora Investment Symposium (ADIS23) was truly a remarkable event. After three years of virtual and hybrid offerings, ADN hosted the return of our in-person flagship conference with more than 300 attendees across three days of meaningful networking and knowledge-sharing. We thank our attendees from over 25 countries for choosing to be present with us in the Silicon Valley to celebrate and envision the future of Africa. We give special thanks to our sponsors for helping us make the symposium possible. We couldn't have done it without your support.

In this spirit of gratitude, we are delighted to present you with the ADIS23 summary and action report. This report provides an overview of the symposium, capturing the event through photos, testimonials, session highlights, survey responses, outcomes, and upcoming events. We give thanks and recognition to our board, sponsors, speakers, executive advisory council, programs committee, volunteers, and team for making this event possible and a huge success.

As a part of our ongoing effort to engage the network, we look forward to sharing the ADIS23 recordings with you all as learning labs in the coming weeks. For now, please save the date for our ninth annual symposium next year: March 20-22, 2024. We hope to see you there and at our upcoming Impact and Innovation Forum events.

As always, thank you,

Almaz Negash
Founder & Executive Director

Beyond Remittances Series

African Diaspora Network continues the dialogue on diaspora engagement and beyond remittances in 2023. Learn more about our ongoing global convening series:

2023 Skoll Marmalade Festival

On April 13, 2023, African Diaspora Network, Global Diaspora Insights, and AFFORD hosted the “Beyond Remittances" session at the 2023 Skoll Marmalade Festival. Attendees from across the globe explored new approaches to Diaspora engagement beyond remittances and approaches to sustainable investment.

Among the key takeaways, summarized by Dr. Martin Russell of Global Diaspora Insights:
  • African diasporans are embedded widely across industries and sectors, including international development. The African diaspora engagement sector is primed to scale.

  • Scaling requires the participation and action of the diaspora as well as government, foundations, and NGOs. The role of government is critical, particularly through long-term policy infrastructure and implementation.

  • Failures to scale should be seen as lessons to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

  • Diaspora engagement will be interdisciplinary in execution, but begins with social science, not economic science.

  • Equally important is for Diasporans to invest in themselves. This is usually overlooked.

This session is a part of African Diaspora Network’s ongoing Impact & Innovation Forums on “Beyond Remittances,” dedicated to increasing awareness, engagement, and action on how the diaspora can go beyond remittances to contribute to the betterment of the continent of Africa.
