A grey whale dives for herring eggs in Sitka Sound.
Spring always delights us with the return of the herring who spawn along the shallows and kelp forests in Sitka Sound. This abundance of the oil-rich fish brings thousands of bald eagles, sealions, salmon, and whales to us.

In years past, the predominant whale has been the humpback whale, much to the delight of photographers and whale-watchers. But in the last few years, we seem to be experiencing a shift in this pattern, and grey whales are showing up to feed on the eggs deposited on the rocks and blades and stipes of kelp ("leaves and stalk").

Also surprising and delightful - they are mating! The literature says that this species completes mating in early March, but we have watched several very obvious mating acts in progress in April and May here. Let's just say; It is impressive. More info can be found here. We are happy they are happy they are enjoying their vacation in spectacular and romantic Sitka Sound!

A local delicacy is herring roe on kelp - and this is what fills the marinas with commercial fishing boats each April.

The hot springs calleth

And we must go!

Sitka is lucky to have several wonderful natural hot springs in the area. One of our favorites is Goddard Hot Springs - known to the Tlingit, and to Russian settlers - it is named for Dr. Goddard who built an early health spa and later a 3-story hotel.  After 1946, the building was no longer used and it was torn down to be replaced by two modern cedar bathhouses, owned and maintained by the city of Sitka, the US Forest Service, and volunteers.

The second photo is a cleared area on one of the nearby islands that was likely constructed long ago by the Tlingit to bring their large canoes up the beach.

Blain is SUPER excited to be able to offer Introduction to Sailing Classes again this spring. He gets to take 6 folks at a time aboard the BOB, and teach them the basics. We are thrilled to be partnering with the Sitka Maritime Heritage Society this year and look forward to providing a great opportunity for Sitkans.
The Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka is one of our favorite places in the world, and we were thrilled to be asked for a donation at their annual gala and fundraiser. We offered a sunset sail with wine and hors d'oevre for auction: and it was won by Diana from Sitka! The sail was perfect, including some fancy wing-on-wing maneuvering through the narrow passes, and an exciting show from the group of grey whales mentioned above. Thank you Diana and crew! We had a blast.
Monique's birthday is in late March, and we got to celebrate all week with a sea-kayaking trip to one of our local Forest Service cabins, and a few nights on the BOB with a group of friends over Easter weekend. The morning was going to be a bit too extra, so the Easter Bunny hopped aboard the BOB.
Boy, folks, the schedule is pretty crammed. Our 2023 season still has one early June trip, but that's it. Come sail away with us!
