Reviewing a Weekend of Alpha Events
Alpha Nu Omega was recently engaged in a long weekend of activities (April 21-23) in Duluth.
Blazer Coating Ceremony
First there was a welcoming dinner Friday night at Clyde Iron Works which included a blazer coating ceremony for new actives. John Erickson initiated a "Bring Back Blue Blazers" program several years ago and continued the tradition by providing the distinctive Alpha blazer to new members.
Mike Dean Memorial
Second, there was a memorial service for Hall of Fame member Michael Dean held Saturday morning at Lakeview Covenant Church. The service was well attended by over 200 of Mike's friends and associates including 39 members of Alpha Nu Omega. There was a visitation that included a video slideshow prepared by Greg Hinds followed by a memorial service in which people shared their memories and respect for Mike. Jim Klang and John Erickson together with Halvard Berg from Norway related on behalf of Alpha what Mike has meant to the fraternity and to them personally. It was a lovely service followed by a photo session of the attending Alphas and a lovely lunch on a wintry day in Duluth.
Scholarship Banquet
On Saturday evening a banquet was held at Fitger's Boat Club to award Alpha Scholarships to deserving members of the Active Chapter. Jeff Gaylord and Chad Roberts conducted the award ceremony. Awarding scholarships is our mission and with the recent surge in the scholarship fund we were able to present $12,000 to four individuals. There was a nice cocktail hour and dinner with over 50 people attending. We also got an update on the activities of the Active Chapter from the new active president Thomas Erickson.
Farewell Brunch
A few individuals unwilling to depart from cold Duluth met for brunch at the Boat Club on Sunday morning to talk about the wonderful weekend and reminisce about younger days.
