New CAR T-cell immunotherapy shows promising results for treating blood cancer patients

The CALM clinical trial, initiated at King’s in 2016, aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of UCART19 – the first ‘off-the-shelf’ CAR-T cell product of its kind against adult patients with B-ALL.  A total of 25 adult patients with relapsed or treatment-resistant B-ALL  were treated with UCART19. Side effects of the treatment were found to be manageable with no unexpected complications. 48% of treated patients achieved a complete remission lasting on average 7.4 months.  Read more here

Vitamin B5 could help improve red blood cell production in people with Myelodysplastic syndromes

Scientists from Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary University of London, led by Kevin Rouault-Pierre, and the Francis Crick Institute, have uncovered why patients with a rare type of blood cancer, Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), suffer from ineffective red blood cell production, and how vitamin B5 could be combined with existing drugs to improve outcomes. Projects should be aligned with the Centre’s new early detection and prevention theme: Improving early detection and prevention through analysis of the biology of early disease. Cancer Grand Challenges

 Nine new Grand Cancer Challenges have been announced to the global research community. International teams are invited to apply for up to $25m in funding. Expressions of Interest are open until 22 June.

Webinar: Understanding the developmental origins of cancers

This seminar will look at how a better understanding of the developmental origins of these cancers is not only a powerful tool for investigating normal development, but also a critical step towards improving cancer prevention, detection, and treatment in the young. EDI Seminar: Eugene Manley - STEM outreach, Health Equity, and Minority Mentorship Programs in Lung Cancer
