April Recap

Play Therapy Room.

Play therapy is not about play. It is about life and death. It is about hope and dreams. It is about learning and growing. It is about strength and survival."

Play takes children, and adults quite frankly, to their growing edge. Play allows individuals to confront what is otherwise too daunting to approach without the assistance of distance and perspective provided by play. By substituting toys for words, play allows us to become curious about our problems and experiment with a variety of solutions. In turn, toys substitute for and expand our vocabulary. A child may not know how to say, "I become overwhelmed when I see the doctor." In play, the child can grab the silly green doctor puppet, the plastic medical kit and experience and express the felt sense, while working through all the number of ways to overcome the fear. Where children cannot possibly describe their struggles, they are allowed the opportunity to demonstrate their struggles. Great play therapists take that opportunity to listen to the unspoken words and meet the child or adult’s fears with compassion and support. We are excited to share the love of play therapy with the community we serve here at Family Promise of Midland.

Parent Training: Literacy & financial.

The class covered various topics such as credit scores, how to establish good credit, and how to address bad credit. We also highlighted the importance of having a good credit score and provided a budgeting sheet to help parents save money while grocery shopping and cutting unnecessary expenses to increase their income.
Donations.

Chaney and Katie Coffman, of Midland, donated a 2014 Ford Edge to Family Promise. This will be going to a mom in our program who has worked extremely hard to move forward toward greater independence.  An ENORMOUS THANK YOU goes out to the Coffman's!

Ysirdo's story.

We would like to shine a spotlight on one of our amazing members. Below is Ysorido's story.

Hi, my name is Ysidro Duran but I go by Sid. I’m 36 years old and I have two kids.

I was raised in a close family with one older brother and older sister, and I am the baby. I did have a good childhood, great birthdays, and Christmas’s, the whole nine. I started smoking weed at the age of 13 and from that age on I just got into more trouble and doing more drugs.

In 2007 I started using meth and smoking it. After about a year or so I got into trouble and went to prison for a while. After I got out, I met my ex-wife. We got married in 2012 and had a son together, she already had a daughter, and her father was not in the picture, so I stepped in. I had a great life, a beautiful wife and two amazing kids. I had cars and a great job, but I was still using drugs and I was not faithful to my wife, my kids and most of all GOD.

In 2018 we separated, and things just went downhill from there. I started using more and more meth, and not just that, I started to shoot it up too. I then moved to heroin and started doing both at the same time. My wife also got into drugs pretty bad and could no longer care for the kids, so I took them. Yes, I was still using them a lot, but I did have a good job and could still take care of them a lot better. I am not downing her; she is a great mom that loves her kids, and I am so proud of her now because she’s actually clean and doing pretty good now. We are in the middle of a divorce now, but we keep it good for the kids.

In 2020 I went to jail for some old charges and that is when I decided to break those chains the devil had on me. I got into a program called drug court, it’s like intense probation. Well, I’ve been doing so good thanks to drug court. I had to change everything about myself, so I surrendered my life to the highest God. I joined a church that was the second best thing I could have done and got baptized on March 20th, 2022. Thank God!!!! Now I’m in Family Promise doing great thanks to those here. They are amazing, so caring and understanding, they helped me so much to get my life back on track. Words can’t explain how much these people really care and want to see me do good. I am so grateful for the Family Promise program. I’m also a pretty big deal in my church, I am the set up and tear down director and I love what I do for them. I am also well over a year clean and going strong.  I can’t wait to see what else God has instore for me and my family.

I can’t express enough the love Family Promise has for people like me. So, thank you so much from the Duran family. I love, love, love you guys.

Sincerely,
Ysidro Duran aka Sid
Counseling Corner
Dear Families,

Hello all, I hope this letter finds you in good mental health. I will begin using the approach of Lifespan Integration with those who are interested.

“The human mind develops interactively in response to the environment of early childhood. Defensive systems that are created in response to a hostile environment as a child continue to operate in the present, mostly out of consciousness, even when they are no longer needed,” (Pace, P. Connecting Ego States Through Time.(2020). When children grow up in environments of trauma or neglect, or both, they develop different selves and self-states. What is produced is a non-unified person of self and neural integration does not occur. This is when a person as an adult consistently does not feel whole and feel like something is broken.

Warm regards,

Crystal Featherstone
