SECA is building a neighbourly community, where residents feel a sense of belonging and community pride.  Join us!

IN THIS ISSUE:

   COMMUNITY CAMPFIRE

We had a lovely time at our Community Campfire yesterday. It was great to see about 100  residents turn out to enjoy the event and stick around to play on the playround, play in the park or just sit and soak up the sun.  Many thanks to the Shoppers Drug Mart at Evergreen Village for donating the hot dogs and marshmallows.

Events like these are only possible thanks to many volunteers from our core team that plans the campfires to event volunteers. Thanks to all!  We are currently recruiting volunteers for the upcoming events below.  please email info@shawneeevergreen.ca today! There are a variety of roles and shifts. We’ll find a fit for you.

PEDALHEAD CAMPS IN 2024?
SECA would like to bring these amazing day camps to our community for next summer. To do that we need families to write letters of support. If you write a letter to their Regional Manager for Alberta at esmithson@pedalheads.com and copy us at info@shawneeevergreen.ca, we’ll enter your name into a draw to win one of eight  $50 discount cards for 2023 summer day camps. This year, Bridlewood, Parkland, and Walden are the nearest day camp locations.  Register for a Pedalhead program here.

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURS – ALEXANDRA O'ROURKE

Alexandra O'Rourke has a passion for connecting people of all ages to the natural world.  She has been an Environmental Educator for 15 years, a mother of two, founder of Urban Wild Calgary and a child of nature all of her life.  When her son was 2 years old, she started to wonder how to nurture her family’s connection and curiosity for the natural world in an engaging and fun way. In response, she designed and hosted her first family nature program in 2014 and has been delivering nature immersion curriculum for families ever since!

Her program  recipe is simple: a sprinkle of nature inspired activities, a scoop of family nature walks and a dollop of child-led play. Mix for 90 minutes to cook up curiosity and connection to the natural world.  One parent participant reflects on experiencing this simple recipe: “I realize now how important our connection to nature is. After a program, we return home content and relaxed because it strengthens our connection to self and to others.”
Alex completed her MA in Environmental Education and Communication at Royal Roads in 2017— her thesis is entitled Family Nature Clubs: Exploring the Parent-Child-Nature Relationship. Her family nature program builds on the results of her case study including nature as a safe partner in our family experiences and the value of following the child's lead in the process.

Alex has been delivering her program for SECA since 2019, helping to build community by spending time together playing outdoors. With the generous support of SECA, Alex delivers monthly family nature programs in Fish Creek Provincial Park at no cost. She also runs weekly Urban Wild programs for families at various parks through out the city of Calgary. She is especially excited to be offering a new program this  summer, Wild Fairy Camps for families!

   CITY OF CALGARY UPDATES

PREPARE YOUR FAMILY AND HOME FOR AN EMERGENCY
Emergencies and disasters can happen anytime, anywhere. By taking simple actions today, you can become better prepared for an emergency or disaster. The Prepare your Home video series provides helpful tips to prepare and protect your home and family in the event of an emergency.
FENCE MAINTENANCE
Your fences are your responsibility - both sides, even when you back onto a busy road like James McKevitt Rd. Well maintained fences help everyone's property value. Community Standards Bylaws require that you keep your  fence in a state of good repair to ensure public safety.

In the bylaw, “Good Repair” means a condition where something is free from:
(i) broken, missing, or fallen parts;
(ii) rot or other significant deterioration; or
(iii) openings which are not secured against trespassers or infiltration or air and precipitation

If you have concerns about a fence in your area, call 3-1-1.
TRAFFIC BYLAWS
Traffic Bylaws And Community Standards Bylaws regulate the parking and use of recreational vehicles, such as motor homes or trailers, in the city. See The City’s webpage for a summary that includes these points and more.
  • Detached trailers and campers cannot be parked on city streets or alleys.
  • RVs, such as motor homes, can be parked on a street immediately adjacent to the owner's residence for a maximum of 36 hours. The RV must then be moved to an off-street location for at least 48 hours before it can be returned to the street.
  • Recreational Vehicles (for example, RVs and boats) can be parked on a hard surfaced driveway or parking stall in the front yard of a house for up to 36 hours.
GRAFFITI IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
We have been noticing some graffiti in our community.  Click here to learn about prevention and removal tips from The City.
CALGARY RIVER VALLEYS PROJECT
Calgary’s river valleys are essential to our city - they’re at the core of our city’s identity and its appeal as a place to live, play and do business. Making careful decisions about how we plan, develop and build in the floodplain is fundamental to protecting and enhancing the value of our river valleys while strengthening our overall resilience to the impacts of flooding.

The City is now updating the Calgary’s River Valleys Plan, which will provide guidance for decisions about how we plan, develop and build in the floodplain.  Early engagement takes place April 27-June 5, focused on clarifying priorities and values for our river valley communities. Participate in the conversation.

   SENIOR'S CORNER

FUTURE SENIOR'S EVENTS
SECA had hoped to host a Senior’s Meet Up in May.  We will have to  cancel unless seniors come forward to assist in planning and delivery of the Meet Up.  We are very keen to reach and serve this part of our community. With a few volunteers we could host some simple events to connect the 55+ crowd.  Would you like to learn how to belly dance, meet for coffee and conversation or to play cards?  We are open to your ideas.   Please email info@shawneeevergreen.ca
ART IN THE PARK FOR THE 50+ CROWD?
Would you participate in an Art in the Park session? We need to know that this program would be well attended.  Tell us your thoughts at  info@shawneeevergreen.ca
UNISON
The Kerby Centre is now called Unison At Kerby Centre for 50+. The centre provides programs and services developed to support generations 50+ to live their best lives. You’ll be amazed at the number of programs and events they offer. Check them out!
