Compassionate St. Augustine
Our mission: to influence, inspire and grow a culture of compassion through advocacy, awareness, and action.

Our vision: to inspire the desire for others to affirm the Charter for Compassion, and by word and deed, to help grow and foster sustainable cultures of compassion locally, nationally and globally.
Message from the Executive Director

Greetings friends of Compassionate Saint Augustine,

There is a lot going on with your CSA friends!

One of our top news items is that we will be launching our new Compassionate St. Augustine website this week. Our web team dedicated countless hours to innovate and update the site.

Another top news item is that a new Board has been identified, approved, and appointed. Our illustrious and industrious Board members are all poised to lead Compassionate St. Augustine into a future bright with promise. Additional details on these two exciting items will be provided in a special newsletter later this week.

I want to dedicate the remainder of this month’s column to a third top news item. Please join me in celebrating, recognizing, and thanking our outgoing Board President, Ervin Bullock and our long time Board member Warren Clark. Their dedication and commitment have fostered active engagement, stability, and growth in our initiatives throughout their tenure on CSA’s board.

Ervin is only the second board President in our organization’s history. She has served and led in that capacity for nearly eight years. Warren has been a member since our inception nearly ten years ago. They both epitomize the soul of Compassionate St. Augustine! Individually and together, Ervin and Warren have made so many contributions it would take an entire page to list them all. Suffice it to say they will be missed in their leadership roles. We wish them only the best.

We will be recognizing Ervin and Warren at this month’s Community Gathering at the Mission House at noon on Friday, May 12th. Please join us to share a meal, meet some of our new Board members, and say thank you to our inspirational outgoing leaders. There just might be a surprise in store, too! I hope to see you there, if not before.

With gratitude,

Arthur

Charter Corner

CHARTER CORNER
Tidbits from the Charter for Compassion (CFC)

Compassion is not an option. It's the key to our survival.

~Karen Armstrong

Welcome to the May edition of the Charter Corner, where you can find easy links to compassionate updates! After our April showers and Earth Day celebrations, it seems appropriate that on May 1 we are invited to participate in Heal the Waters day. This aligns nicely with our ever-present invitation to engage with the Charter’s Environment sector. In keeping with May’s growing agenda, on May 13 at noon EST, CfC is hosting the first Global Read for Kids and Company, We Are All Flowers.

You might also be interested in the soon coming launch of Compassionate USA, an effort to bring together all US Compassionate Cities. Compassionate USA plans to kick off at the US Conference of Mayors in Columbus, OH in early June.

For CSA’s part, in addition to our Mayor supporting Compassionate USA, Compassionate St. Augustine  continues infusing empathy into action with local and regional initiatives. We are taking steps toward bringing all of Florida’s Compassionate Cities together. Our aspirational goal is to have Florida become  a Compassionate State. As of this writing there is one.

Want to find out who shares your passion for compassionate actions? Adding your name to the Map of Co-creators allows you to indicate your areas of interest, creating a pathway for collaboration with other like-minded members of the ever-growing compassionate community. It’s easy to connect and is a tremendous opportunity for two or more to coalesce around  initiatives that matter to you.

Compassionate St. Augustine strives to infuse the Golden Rule into all we do. Areas and opportunities for growing in compassionate ways continue to emerge. We are grateful for your encouragement and engagement!

Getting into Good Trouble

 May 3, 2023, Action Gathering

Meeting Focus:   “And how are the children?“

There is a tribe in Africa called Masai whose traditional greeting to each other is
“Casserian Engeri.” It means, “And how are the children?”

They do not ask each other, “How are you?” or “How's your day?”
but rather they ask about the next generation.

Compassionate Women News and Information
Compassionate Women met on April 27th and heard Robin Thomas’ amazing journey of resilience and faith. We also learned how the recent legislature had cut funding for disabled persons. Robin works with other people with many disabilities including spinal cord injuries and she reported that the state has cut funding for resources and programs for her clients. She herself had her wheelchair repossessed and only now has one through a friend. We have decided to try to take on this issue through advocacy. If you would like to join us in this please contact Ervin Bullock: ervinbullock@yahoo.com.

The next Compassionate Women’s potluck luncheon will be May 24th from 10-12 at New Mt Moriah and will be led by Ruth Hope. Several of us have been appreciating the New Mt Moriah prayer service from 12-1 after the luncheon. You are always welcome to attend these as well.

Good Trouble and Compassionate Women have been meeting at New Mt. Moriah Christian Ministries for the past 3 years. Their parking lot is used by Epic-Cure weekly food distribution, the Wildflower Clinic and other ministries as well as our monthly meetings.

We are hosting a Gofundme campaign to transform the parking lot into a “kid safe” basketball court and safe parking lot for their many ministries. Please consider supporting this campaign.

Compassionate St. Augustine Youth Initiative
Springtime is a very busy time indeed. Youth have exams and end of year events coming up, so the Compassionate St. Augustine Youth Initiative will not meet in May as we have already created a plan of action, moving forward with our initiative.

There is planning in the process for a special June meeting, when many of our out of states students will have returned.  For more information about Compassionate Youth, contact sultanarahim@gmail.com or ervinbullock@yahoo.com.
Compassionate St. Augustine Gift Garden Initiative
Compassionate St. Augustine has worked two years ago with Flagler students in the Enactus Club in planting our first gift garden here in St. Augustine at the Webster school.  Today’s photo captures the fruit of that labor with the children from the Webster school tasting their very first strawberries. OMG!  They loved them.

And the second photo is a Veritas student harvesting celery.
I’m happy to report that Flagler students on their own planted  a third gift garden last week at the Ketterlinus Elementary school.  Thank you Flagler students. It’s so satisfying to watch children have their first gardening experience and really enjoy it!

Our Gift Garden with Veritas students has donated nearly 200 pounds of vegetables to Epic-Cure since October. We are expecting to reach our goal of 200 pounds of fresh produce this coming week and celebrate with ice cream!
Beats and Beets Drumming
Compassionate St. Augustine invites you to Join Into The Rhythm LLC for a fun, family friendly, fully facilitated drum circle in the Lincolnville community garden.  No experience necessary, instruments are provided and beginners are encouraged.  Come discover the joy of community drumming.

New Partnership with Deep Creek Youth Academy?
Deep Creek Youth Academy, an incarceration facility for boys in Hastings, Florida has asked Compassionate St Augustine to partner with them in providing enhanced learning and service opportunities.

We recently met with Tim Patterson at the Deep Creek Academy, a level 6 youth incarceration..  We were very impressed with their more open facility and atmosphere.  They would appreciate CSA’s help with providing enriching experiences for their youth. Many of these boys can go off campus to sports, service or enriching events.

This could be a great opportunity to serve "at risk" incarcerated youth again.  If you would like to explore engaging at this facility contact Ervin at ervinbullock@yahoo.com and she will help you connect with Mr. Patterson for more information.
