We Spoke for Animals at the EU

"Who should look at suffering?" Jo-Anne McArthur recently asked a full room including Members of the European Parliament, advisors, media, and NGOs.
 
"Anyone who can help. And that is all of us."

In late March, our work was on exhibit at the European Residence Palace in Brussels, with a focus on industrial farming. The EU kills 10 billion farmed animals every year, and NGOs and MEPs are set to curb the suffering inherent in current farming practices by drastically improving animal welfare legislation. Jo-Anne was there to show the audience what life is like for animals living in industrial farms.

For broiler chickens, the miserable journey to the slaughterhouse begins at the hatchery. Workers place healthy individuals in plastic containers and dispose of weak individuals along with discarded egg shells in a macerator. These actions are legal and standard practices.

Sangduen "Lek" Chailert is known in Thailand and throughout the world as "the elephant whisperer." From the time she saw elephants exploited and abused at a logging operation when she was a teenager, Lek has devoted her life's work to ending the use of captive elephants for labour, tourism, and entertainment. Today, she runs Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary and educational outreach center for rescued elephants.
