Editor's Piece

Hi All,

As we get caught up to the excitement of our Centenary next season I think people need to remember that ordinary things matter too. I've not received any images to put in the newsletter for a few months. Fortunately we've had a run of competitions to fill the gaps.  That hasn't happened this week, so I've indulged my delight in Tuesday evening's speaker and put David McKibbin's images amongst the words that Eric wrote. What a speaker! Eric heard about how to take drone pictures. I heard hard he had to work to get the right image for the right moment in time and for the right newspaper. His images have to be original and topical. We have had a run of excellent lecturers recently - thanks to Bob Allen for all his hard work last year in making this happen.

The final committee meeting of the season is taking place next week. This newsletter has articles from both Tony Large as President and Adrian Binney as Secretary. Both are standing down at the AGM so I'd like to say how much I as Communication Secretary appreciate the support and encouragement I have received from both of them. Is there anyone else you'd like to say thank you to? More on that in future newsletters, but if you have any comments you'd like to make in the Newsletter, do send them to me.

Are you excited about the society evening? Two sets of PDIs, two sets of prints. The winners will be in next week's newsletter.

The Centenary Committee are meeting tomorrow, so I am hoping to have some updates in next week's newsletter - watch this space.

I hope you are all ready to take photos of the bluebells that are starting to bloom now - share the photos maybe?

Stay Safe,

Carey Wall

Review of Chris 'The Big Ladder' Gorman's Lecture
words by Eric Blake
images by David McKibbin

Having been a drone user since 2018, I was really looking forward to Chris Gorman’s’ presentation and boy, what a fantastic night it was.

He provided a brief photographic history, explaining how he went from a press photographer to a picture editor, returning from a 10-year period in New Zealand, to then look at the UK with a fresh pair of eyes and to realise that we are all very lucky to live in such a beautiful, safe country with stunning landscapes.

He had also noted there were very few drone photographers and he could fill a gap in the press industry.

The evening was spliced with videos, the first showing Charlie Waite critiquing The Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The back stories were all very interesting and demonstrated that most of his work requires meticulous planning, the correct permissions, the correct weather, connections and a stroke of luck.

Chris also demonstrated that the power of shadows on subjects, especially when orchestrated, can be really powerful.

Chris mentioned he has completed several projects with RHS and they give him free rein to devise stunning picture like this where every last detail has been strategically positioned for maximum effect, even asking the gardener to spread his legs!

I only heard positive feedback and thanks to Bob for booking another fantastic speaker.

Long live drone photographers 😊

Best regards

Eric
Bob Allen: Chris had meant to mention this workshop in Petersfield which has spaces
Ed: Chris also showed a clip from breakfast TV, showing how he used his drone to capture images to show the strangeness of Covid lockdown
From Your President
by Tony Large

Everyone in the UK is being asked to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III by volunteering for a good cause. It can be anything, such as litter picking, planting a tree, helping at a food bank or reach out to someone feeling low or alone.  The Coronation Bank Holiday on Monday 8 May has been declared a National Day of Volunteering in tribute, say organisers, to His Majesty’s life of service.  Called The Big Help Out, it is jointly chaired by the Scouts and Royal Voluntary Service.

Now whether you support the monarchy or not, please reflect on what you could volunteer for, say helping a Society you are already a member of perhaps?  So, I am putting a call out for our own ‘Big Help Out’.

As I have said before, the ’Society’ it does not run itself.  We have no ‘full time’ staff, just enthusiastic volunteers and helpers. Your Society really does need you.

We have our last Committee meeting of this season in under two week's time, please indicate your interest by Wednesday 25th April, so the Committee can make preparations, one way or another, as how we will continue the Society next season, our Centenary season, without a Secretary or Vice president, this is your last chance. What better way to celebrate our Centenary and the Bank Holiday, by volunteering.

Thank you for taking time to read this.
