Cultural Legacy Carving

Charles and Ryder Dumont, Tk̓emlúps band members, have created a large feature log that resembles the entranceway of a traditional Indigenous pit-house at the new Sweláps Market grocery store. The log is a symbol of the TteS Band's dedication to preserving their cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations. Charles, who owns Coyote Contracting, performed a traditional smudging ceremony before beginning his work, and sees his work as a way of mentoring young people in the community. The logs used for the entrance canopy were harvested on-Reserve through a partnership between TteS Natural Resources and Tolko Wood Products, while the feature log, made of Western Red Cedar, was chosen for its durability and resistance to weathering. The log was carved on-site at the grocery store development, and Charles and his family gathered for a blessing ceremony when it was set into place. The Sweláps Market, opening in fall 2023, showcases the Band's commitment to sustainability, community, and tradition, with the feature log serving as a reminder of the community's rich cultural heritage.
