The Brooklyn Climate Community fortnightly meeting is this Thursday, April 20, 2023, at The Chomp, 3200 SE Milwaukie Ave. This group is for anyone who is concerned about the climate crisis and wants to do something about it collectively.
This week is Hosford Middle School QSA Pride Week. There are clothing themes for each day:
Tu - Tye dye/Rainbows day
W - Ugly sweater/outfit day
Th - Dress with a friend as an Iconic Duo day
F - Black for Day of Silence
East Side Litter Pickup & Plant Swap is this Saturday, Earth Day, April 22, 2023, from 10am-2pm at Powell Park, SE 21st Ave and SE Powell Blvd. See graphic above!
Grout Elementary will be doing a reunification drill at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2023. This drill is designed to practice how the school will reunite families after a major event or emergency. Caregivers should make sure emergency contact information is up-to-date, and plan to picking up their student(s) at 1:00pm. Please check the Grout Family Newsletter for details.
The following update to the safety issues on SE Powell Blvd at SE 26th, near Cleveland High School, was published by Principal Jo Ann Wadkins in a recent newsletter:
One proposal for SE 26th in front of the school is to add an enhanced crosswalk. PBOT is applying for a grant for the funding and could start construction as early as this summer.
We'll try to get more details.
Last Friday, April 14, 2023, a person drove a stolen car at speeds up to 50mph on the Springwater Corridor cycle/pedestrian path that passes through Brooklyn. Jonathan Maus at BikePortland has the deets.
Nigel Jaquiss at Willy Week reports that the Northwest Environmental Defense Center filed a lawsuitagainst the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality concerning the proliferation of algal blooms in the lagoon at Ross Island. The lawsuit states the blooms are related to the refilling of the lagoon bottom.

Trains are getting longer. Railroads are getting richer. But these “monster trains” are jumping off of tracks across America and regulators are doing little to curb the risk.

If you are interested in working on the railroad crossing issue and can make the time commitment, currently an hour or two a week, please contact the board.
