Recently a mooring owned by a CRYC member broke loose. The buoy was recovered along with about 8 feet of chain. This is what the end of the chain looks like!
Fortunately this mooring was no longer being used and no boats were harmed. If you have a mooring at the club, your chain could look just like this. This corroded section would have been far enough under water to escape detection from the surface by pulling chain up. I actually put the buoy on this mooring a few years ago and the chain I could see when I pulled it up was fine.
Mooring inspections are not easy to arrange way up the river where we are. One firm I contacted would not come out for just one, but would for a $1500 day rate inspect several moorings. Replacement chain would be additional. If we can get 4 or 5 of us together on this the price would be reasonable.
If you have a mooring at CRYC and are interested, email commodore@cryc.org and we will see if we can get a group together. The firm in question can also put down a new mooring if you are interested in that.
