'Feminism’ was the buzz word in 2013, with luminaries including Sheryl Sandberg, Chimamanda Adichie and Beyonce referencing the term in their lyrics and written works. This trend marginally spilled over into the world of trade, and it wasn’t until 2014 that we saw the first cases of explicitly feminist foreign policy in trade. However, in the intervening years, initiatives to integrate women, particularly in emerging markets, into the global trading value chain, appear tepid or non-existent at best.
Hosted by the Association of Women in International Trade, this virtual panel discussion will feature perspectives from trade and gender expert Lolita Laperle-Forget (Analyst; Women, Business and the Law at the World Bank) and a company that is actively fostering women in trade with Caitlin McDonnell (Head of International Affairs, Global Government Engagement at Visa). Both will share their insights on how gender equality can be embedded into global trade agreements and the positive impacts that feminist trade policies have on women. The panel discussion will be moderated by Sharon Ordor, Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) – and winner of the 2022 WIIT Trust Scholarship. A brief Q&A session will follow the panel discussion.
