Our Blog

This month is our FIRST Funded Partner HIGHLIGHT! Metasabia our resident storyteller did an interview with Dion Cook from Denkyem Co-op. Below is a snippet of our conversation:

You were a schoolteacher before this, what course brought you here?

While I was teaching, I would always invite the parents of my students to get to know me. That’s how my wife and I operate, we’re always trying to build community wherever we go. My thought process was, if you want to know who’s going to influence your kid for the year, for better or for worse, let’s meet.  A few of the parents took me up on that offer. We would walk or meet for lunch kind of thing. ...

Going from something somewhat more stable like teaching, to something that I had no formal background in, and not knowing what would come from it, that was the right balance of anxiety and excitement. I think that’s a good place to be, I believe that’s where growth happens. I’m not sure I would have done it with our 11-month-old, but back then, we were in a unique situation to take this leap. ...

Threshold Squad Questions Answered

Change is _______.

1. Inevitable and provides opportunities for growth.
2. Sometimes scary and uncomfortable but always a chance to learn and grow.
3. Hard and the only constant.
4. Is life, energy, and movement. It’s also loss, even when it is leading us in the direction we want to go.

My comfort snacks are ______________.

1. Kettle Chips, fried bread with butter and syrup, warm chocolate chip cookies and milk, gummy worms
2. Fig newtons, Doritos, and snickers.
3. Boba cupcakes, a good queso, and honestly it changes.
4. CHIPS! When I was super nauseous in my pregnancy with my second son, I started buying chips (nacho cheese Doritos, sour cream and cheddar cheese ruffles, and chili cheese Fritos to be exact) and leaving them in my car so I could have something in my tummy. Zeke is now 8 ½ and my family still loves searching for, and stealing, my car chips!

On long road trips I like to_______________.

1. I like to create a long playlist beforehand and DJ the whole trip!
2. Blast tunes from the past and sing along loudly.
3. I like to make playlists and talk to my partner, we always have great convos
4. A balance of the planned and unplanned. We pull off the road for interesting milestones, historical markers, and restaurants and are open to changing plans when the universe presents different choices. I always appreciate the things that we couldn’t have planned for, but typically make the trip meaningful for everyone. Our kids are down to travel this way (where are we going to camp tonight?!) but I know it would stress a lot of people out.

___________ is medicine.

1. Laughter and touch. My husband is my Medicine Man:)
2. Love is medicine.
3. Storytelling is medicine. I love good writing whether that be a song, podcast, show or a movie. A great quote or moment turns my whole world around.
4. Clean water, deep sleep, nourishing food, movement and touch are medicines.

Expressing my needs is _____________.

1. Hard but necessary along my path to my healing and liberation, I’m working on it…
2. Expressing my needs is uncomfortable and difficult. I don't like to inconvenience others with my wants/needs. I either don't express and endure or I make it happen for myself without anyone's help or approval.
3. Gets easier with practice
4. Something I’m finally feeling I have a responsibility to do. I’m finding that the hardest part isn’t the external expression, but the internal listening and interpretation. Believing in the power of my own knowing.
