"If you work consistently,
and keep writing,
you'll get lucky more often."
Jack Grapes
We all do it.
Sometimes you sit down and write and write and write and write and write, and all you have to show for it is crap.

Yes, it's frustrating. It throws you off your game and makes you feel like you can't cut. You might say, "What am I doing? What am I working so hard for? I can't do this. I'm no writer."

But I'm here to tell you that YES YOU CAN. You've got this. And BTW you are a writer.

And, BTW, we all write crap sometimes.

What is it about the craft of writing that makes us think it should be easier? That it shouldn't take practice. That it should come out perfect on the first draft.

Do you think actors just show up on the first day of shooting and nail it? Without table reads or rehearsals? Do you think they get it on the first take? Sometimes they do nail that first take, but just sometimes. It's rare.

What about athletes? And dancers? And painters? And any other craft you could think of. Everyone practices and it all starts as crap. It's a process.

Truth is, if you do write something amazing on the first attempt, that's luck. Pure and simple. Luck.  And if you don't, well, then you get to work on it and you know what? You'll make it amazing. It will just take more effort.

That's a good thing.

If you work consistently and keep writing, you'll get lucky more often. And you want to get as lucky as you can as much as you can. It's a process.

So when you don't get lucky, don't beat yourself up. Instead, remember that writing is a practice, a process, a messy one at that. And writing crap is part of the process.

Keep this in mind before you go and toss those 'crap' pieces of writing away, it's those crap pieces that can, and often do, become your best work. That's because you'll put the time and effort into them, trying your darndest to make them better. And, eventually, not only do they become better, they become the best!
