To help with planning for SMSC this term
Welcome to the SMSC Update
for Summer 2023
Planning for SMSC and PSHE for Summer 2023?

This term we continue to bring you a wide range of FREE resources to support SMSC education with many important dates and holidays celebrated in the Summer 2023 term. In this issue, we have explored the theme of new beginnings – looking at some of the new beginnings that are occurring globally in 2023, and telling children about some important changes in the world.

Scroll down to see the whole range of dates and resources below. Here are just a few ideas to give you a flavour:

On 5th June it is World Environment Day. Students are being given the opportunity to promote ecosystem restoration. They can start thinking about how to create a new ecosystem in the environments around their school. Endangered Species Day on 19th May provides students with the opportunity to learn about endangered species globally and how students can promote new beginnings to reverse the damage done to these species ecosystems and habitats. May is Local Community History Month - a space for pupils to learn exciting historical facts about their local area and the people who live there. Promoting the possibility of new friendships to form. Finally, the Coronation of King Charles is being held on the 6th – 8th May. A time for students to learn about what this means for the UK and the new beginnings this coronation holds.
Spiritual: World Environment Day 5th June

“Sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them”

“Ability to be reflective about their own beliefs (religious or otherwise) and perspective on life” Ofsted 2019

World Environment Day (WED) is an international day of environmental awareness and action that happens on 5th June each year. World Environment Day 2023 is being held in Pakistan, with a focus on the theme of Ecosystem Restoration.

Why not use this day to raise awareness and appreciation of the wonderful world around us and encourage children to take positive environmental action to protect all the wonders of nature and planet earth. Perhaps use this day to show your class how we can have a positive effect on the environment by the actions we take and the way we live - no matter how small.

Could you as a school, or class do something to take care of our earth, such as picking up litter, planting some flowers, tree planting or looking at ways that your school recycles. BBC teach life lessons has a good clip on the human impact on the environment here.

Moral: Endangered Species Day 19th May

“Ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives”

“Understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions”

“Interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues” Ofsted

This day was created as a way to remind us how fragile the existence of some animals, plants and insects is and to encourage us to learn about why it is so important to protect these species. Allowing your class to understand that endangered species are animals, plants or insects that aren't extinct yet, but may be on the path to extinction if the correct protective measures aren't taken, will give them the opportunity to be more reflective about what they can do .

This day gives a great opportunity for children to think about animals, plants and insects that are endangered, where they live and the reasons for their danger. Scientists tell us the best way to protect endangered species is to protect the places where they live. Perhaps your class could look at a plant or insect that they may see in their school grounds, such as bees, and look at ways to encourage bees to thrive and visit their school grounds.

Social: Local Community History Month 1st - 31st May

"Willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings, by volunteering, cooperating well with others”

“Use of range of social skills in different contexts” Ofsted

Local and community history month is organised by the Historical Association. Activities occur across the country to raise awareness of community and to highlight local history. Use the month of May to enjoy learning about the local history of your school area, famous people, buildings, and history. It is also an opportunity to ‘inspire, enable and encourage’ children to get involved with local community events and to get out and about and explore and investigate the local surroundings- whether it’s a park, train station, castle, Church, your own school or a certain street in your town, history is all around us!
Cultural: Coronation Of King Charles 6th - 8th May

“Willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical, sporting an cultural opportunities”

“Understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others “

This year marks a historic moment - the Coronations of Their Majesties the King and The Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey in May. Why not use this event as a way to explore coronations past and to bring context to the forthcoming coronation.

As a class you could explore the significance of the coronation as an important historical and national event and find out about key rituals and symbols which take place. Take part in history and celebrate each stage in the coronation ceremony.

As a school you may plan to hold a Coronation Street Party

• to include garden party games, a royal menu, special invitations and, of course, decorations such as bunting and banners.

• Create your own Coronation Art Gallery

• Take inspiration from the tales of coronations past and make your very own works of art to commemorate this occasion. Why not hold an exhibition in your school hall?

A super resource for this occasion is available here

COLLECTIVE WORSHIP RESOURCE

In 39 weekly episodes, the ‘It’s Jesus!’ Worship Curriculum will help children understand the historic, ethnic and religious perspective of Jesus. They will be able to empathise with the cultures and perspectives of the billions of subscribers to the 3 major world religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) that he influenced.

The key moments of Jesus’ life will be told as individual parts of a comprehensive and (broadly) chronological series. The Bible based reflections and applications will, as ever, be gentle, generous, fun, engaging, thoughtful, inspiring, and value-laden - universally accessible to kids of all household backgrounds. The pack is being written in such a way that teachers of any/no faith-subscription, can feel confident to use it.
