Editor's Piece

Hi All,

Happy St Georges' Day.  Did you take any photos of activities to celebrate our patron saint?  Do share! I'm loving the bluebell images - keep them coming.

The images this week are from the Society Evening - what a stunning selection there were. I think I laughed all the way through the presentation of the humorous ones, although a little shocked to read the names of some of the authors. Look on the WPS website to see more than the top 3 images in each category.  (You'll have to navigate to the right year and competition). What a hugely enjoyable evening.

We are gearing up for the AGM on 6th June.  There will be lots going on but now is the time to nominate members for committee posts. Adrian B has put the nomination process clearly in an article below, so do have a look. One of the posts up for renewal is mine.  If you fancy taking over from me, feel free to have a chat with me about the role.  If you think you'd like to take over in a  year's time then feel free to shadow me during the next season. I do enjoy this role but if anyone else would like a go, then I'll support you.

Now is also the time to request an AOB item or motion to be put forward on the night - see Adrian's comments below. If you want to say something to the committee or write an article for the newsletter, please to get in touch or I can pass the message on.

Keep taking those images. Tony L passed me link to the King Alfred Running Day on 1st May. Lots of lovely old buses. I had a look through the Visit Winchester website for ideas and found MayFest on 20th May.  If you have something going on, do let us know. Some people would appreciate a heads up.

If you fancy having a go at printing Roger Buchanan says that David Simmonds has some printing paper free to a good home. See the bottom of this newsletter for details.

Stay Safe,

Carey Wall

WPS Spring Lecture: Tony Bramley FRPS: "Inspiration"

Apr 25, 2023, 7:00 – 10:00 PM (Europe/London)
At the Arc

Please join my meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

Here is Chris Gorman's Lecture on Drone Photography.

Unfortunately Chris left his webcam on during the evening and we ended up recording the ceiling of the ARC in part of the frame.
The audio is also a bit crabby for the first 10 minutes, then comes good.

As usual please limit use to WPS members only.
Also as usual if you watch online you will be limited to a duration of 1 hour by dropbox. Best to download.

Tuesday 6th June

Initial Information

The AGM will be held both at the Arc and on-line.

Details of the evening will be announced later but now is the time for committee nominations and requesting AOB Motions

Tuesday 16th May 2023 = Deadline for Committee Nominations and requesting AOB Motions

Committee Nominations are sought for:

  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Communication Secretary
  • 3 Members Representatives

All nominations for the above posts should be emailed to Secretary@winphotosoc.uk by Tuesday 16th May 2023BOTH by the Proposer and Seconder: detailing:

  • the full name of the member being nominated
  • the Committee role
  • who the other proposer or seconder is
  • and both please cc the candidate.

If any member wishing to be nominated for a committee role who does not know personal email addresses for their intended proposer, seconder or nominee, please email Lilian Hobbs for help, using Treasurer@winphotosoc.uk.

To be clear, 2 emails are required for each nomination, one from the proposer, one from the seconder. This is the same procedure as for the last few years.

Requesting AOB Items or Motions

In accordance with The Constitution, any member wishing to submit an additional AGM Agenda item or Motion should be proposed, seconded and submitted to the Secretary no less than 3 weeks before the meeting.
Procedures are the same as for nominations above, with both the Proposer and Seconder needing to mail the Secretary at Secretary@winphotosoc.uk, again by Tuesday 16th May.

All members will be emailed on Monday 22nd May about the AGM papers and with further information.

Future Events

from Chris Morris

Chris has some images in this exhibition and would like to let you know about this free exhibition in Southampton.

Hi Everyone

You’ll be please to hear that our exhibition of portraits has been delivered successfully.
The gallery love it.

A million thanks to everyone for making this a complete success and
especially to those who have aided the delivery.

It will be on the walls of the foyer of
Southampton City Art Gallery, Commercial Road,  SO14 7LP
on Saturday 22nd April for two whole months.

The exhibition can be seen even when the main gallery is closed as it is next door to the Library.
However, Southampton has one of the best provincial galleries in Britain so do take a little
extra time to explore the other exhibitions on display.

On 25th May2023 at 18.00  the Gallery will have a formal opening of the
National Portrait Gallery’s Creative Connections exhibition.

Our exhibition will be very much a part of that event.
As well as yourselves please feel free to invite others to that opening..(bar available!).

As a courtesy please send an email to
with “Exhibition opening 25th May 2023” in the subject line.
Please include your name(s) and a note to say you will be attending.

As they expect upwards of 350 guests it will avoid any issues if your name is already on the list.

The Phorum Photography Group
- not so much a camera club, more a forum for discussion and having our photographs seen.

Following the crushing disappointment of having our 2020 exhibition "British" cancelled due to Covid we're delighted to have been offered a chance to compliment
the National Portrait Gallery's exhibition in Southampton Art Gallery - Creative Connections which begins in May.

Our exhibition, "Denizens - Friendship. Relationship, Citizenship" is an expression of our commitment to innovative and experiential photography. Many photographers find photographing people difficult and our group is no exception but with a little will and a lot of skill the group has risen to the challenge. Our exhibition is portraits of local people associated with us.

22nd April 2023 to 24th June 2023 - Southampton City Art gallery.
