Signed by the Author: Colson Whitehead
This summer we're thrilled to welcome back two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning author Colson Whitehead, joining us in July for his follow-up to Harlem Shuffle. Whitehead's powerful and hugely entertaining new novel, Crook Manifesto, is a continuation of the Harlem saga that summons 1970s New York in all its seedy glory. Can't make it to the event? We are taking pre-orders for signed editions of the new novel here on harvard.com. Publication date is July 18, and tickets are on sale now to see Colson Whitehead here in Harvard Square on July 19. Each ticket comes with a signed book.

Signed by the Author: Dave Eggers
Indie bookstores love Dave Eggers, and Dave Eggers loves indie bookstores. We are delighted that Mr. Eggers and publisher McSweeneys are working with us to offer Harvard Book Store customers signed (and personalized) copies of the special, deluxe, wood-bound edition of his forthcoming all-ages novel, The Eyes and the Impossible—here on harvard.com. (A very nice regular edition will also be on our shelves on May 9, but this deluxe edition is truly one of a kind.) It is the wild, lyrical, hilarious, and beautiful story of a wild dog living and surviving in an urban park. A signed edition makes a stunning gift for an Eggers-phile and/or a middle-grade reader in your life. These signed pre-orders are available through this exclusive link only, and quantities are limited. Once the page says "sold out," the pre-order opportunity has indeed become a pumpkin, and the order deadline is this Friday, April 28, at noon ET.
"The Eyes and the Impossible is Exhibit A in the argument for children’s books being great literature. What a hero! What a story! What a read! Honestly, it’s the best middle-grade novel I’ve read in years. Honestly, I wish I’d written it. It reminded me why I love kids’ books―and why I love reading itself." ―Annie Barrows, New York Times–bestselling author of the Ivy + Bean series

Signed by the Author: Sir Paul McCartney
And this is the most unique of them all. 175 copies will be produced worldwide of this deluxe edition of Paul McCartney's forthcoming book, 1964: Eyes of the Storm—featuring photography from the wildest year of the Beatles days. Due to extraordinary demand, we are holding a drawing at harvard.com/mccartney for the opportunity to purchase this book. The deadline to enter is midnight on April 30th. Learn more here, and good luck!
This is an amazing book regardless of deluxe status, so if you are shopping for a Beatles fan who is not necessarily looking to add a collector's item to their bookshelf, you can pre-order the regular unsigned edition of 1964 here on harvard.com (publication date is June 13). (And Father's Day happens to be June 18, just so you know.)

Right to Read Day
Today is Right to Read Day, a national day of action to defend, protect, and celebrate your—and every American's—right to read freely. Unite Against Book Bans is providing an action plan on how we can all fight back against censorship. It starts with an act as simple as reading a banned or challenged book. The American Library Association documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago.

|
This week our staff has collected several favorite—and in many cases life-changing—titles that have been banned or challenged by libraries, with texts from Eric Carle, Toni Morrison, Allen Ginsberg, and many others. Browse these selections in the bookstore this week as we kick off the celebration of reading with the Right to Read Day today and then Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday. THANK YOU for being a part of both of these efforts to highlight the importance of books in our lives.
