Educating Families and Students Experiencing Homelessness

Educational strategies are useful for supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and offer positive benefits for both children and their families. Struggles among each individual are not always easy to identify, especially with poverty or traumatic situations. Educational resources are important with designated plans to foster the needs of the students, as well as their parents, experiencing homelessness. The lack of education makes it hard to break the cycle and prevent homelessness in many cities across the country. The McKinney-Vento Act of 1987 protects the students rights for quality education and to inform the parents of state regulated requirements

We are only a few weeks awat from summer! We’ve enjoyed reading, engaging in creative games, and creating amazing art pieces and STEAM projects - we even built a circuit!

Our program supports more than 350 students and families , many of whom struggle to meet their basic needs, including food. You can provide nutritious snacks to students during our program by making a snack donation today.

We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of one semester, two hours per week, at one of our partner shelters across our eight neighborhoods (Rogers Park, Uptown, North Lawndale, Austin, Englewood, Lakeview, South Shore, South Loop and Grand Crossing). Spanish speakers and those able to travel to our South Side shelters are highly encouraged to volunteer with us!
