Staff Spotlight
This month's Staff Spotlight falls on Discovery Coordinator John Hubbard.
What has been your favorite project at WashU? Making incremental improvements to our Primo site. More are on the way, and we’re just beginning the process of selecting the eventual successor to Sierra. Discovery layers are by no means perfect tools for every research need, yet in many cases, they can provide a better means for exploring and locating your desired results than do traditional platforms.
Before working at WashU, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? I was a cartographer. This was back before GPS and smartphones became ubiquitous. I drafted atlases and flat maps for a local map company, learning graphic design, pre-press work, and even some research methods as I went. We would often have to call organizations to figure out exactly where their icon belonged on a map. “Where are you coming from? Oh, no worries, you can’t miss us!” was the standard reply. I also learned how a competitor found out the hard way what a trap street was.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Does omniscience count? Something more low-key would be “The Prize” from the movie Highlander. I feel that we could all use a little help connecting with others these days. Which reminds me, as a remote hire, you cannot unfortunately swing by my desk to chat, but sending a message via Teams is the next best way to reach me.
The Staff Spotlight is brought to you by the Staff Engagement Committee.
