2023 Teen Art Contest Winners

Kaitlin Mandell, an 8th grader from Stoller Middle School won 1st Place in the 2023 WCCLS Summer Reading Teen Art Contest. Her piece depicting singing birds captured the essence of this year’s ‘Find Your Voice’ theme. Kaitlin won a $200 Amazon card for her entry and her art will be featured in program promotion all around the county. The contest’s 3rd Place winner was Jasper Gillispie, a Sunset High student who made a very stylish picture of a wolf singing into the night. His prize was a $50 Amazon gift card. Chowder Chat 5.6: Author Ellie Marney

New York Times bestselling Young Adult author Ellie Marney joins the Teen Council via Zoom from Australia to discuss her books and the writing process. This interview took place on April 10, 2023. You can listen to it online here, or download Chowder Chat on your favorite podcast app.

Ellie Marney is a crime writer and author of None Shall Sleep, The Killing Code, and many other series and standalones. Her newest book, the second installment of the None Shall Sleep series –  Some Shall Break – will be released in June 2023.

Marney has lived in many places around the world including Indonesia, India and Singapore– but now she lives in Australia with her family. To promote Australian women authors, she helped create the LoveOzYAbookclub and advocates for others to help them find their voice.

Apply for the Teen Library Council

Teen Council applications will go live on May 15 and will close on June 4. If you are interested in joining a fun group of middle and high school teens who help plan and promote services for local teens, this might be the group for you. Check this part of our website for the application during that time. A limited number of applicants will be interviewed in person in June to fill the open spots on the council. Oregon State Legislature Honorary Page Program
 

District 33 (Northwest and Downtown Portland) State Representative Maxine Dexter and team will sponsor pages in the 2023 Oregon Honorary Page Program! The program offers an accessible way for students to explore the inner-workings of the legislature, tour the capitol building, and partake in our civic and democratic processes. The one-day interactive program will occur in the House chamber and is open to all in-district youth aged 12-17. Apply online here.
 

Marvel vs. DC vs. Manga
Saturday, May 6 | 2-3:30pm | Cedar Mill Library

Which hero has the best rapport with animals? Which villain has the best fighting moves? Celebrate Free Comic Book Day at your library and join a Marvel vs DC vs Manga debate game. Participants will select heroes and villains at random, do some research and then present the best case for their hero or villain in a certain skill. We will be making buttons out of old comics while the debate rages. Registration is recommended but drop-ins are welcome. Ages 11-18.
 
High School Journalism Institute at OSU

High School Journalism Institute is a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in journalism.

The eight-day, no-cost institute runs during summers at the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. Students stay in residence halls on campus; work with journalism professionals from The Oregonian/OregonLive and other Oregon media outlets; and use Orange Media Network’s state-of-the-art facilities while also earning a college credit.

The program runs July 15-22, the deadline to apply is May 19. Apply online here.
 

Teen Game Night: Super Smash Tourney
Friday, May 19 | 6-8pm | Cedar Mill Library

Compete in our Smash Bros Tournament. Meet your friends and play console games together. Switch, Wii and Gamecube games are available. Tournament will be played with library consoles and controllers, but participants can bring well labeled controllers to use with non tournament devices. All characters available except DLC.

YA Authors at Powell's Books in Cedar Hills Crossing
 
Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing is hosting two popular young adult authors in April, discussing a new book release. Attendance is free, purchase of the author's new book may be required to join the signing line after the event.

Owen will be joined in conversation by Aiden Thomas, author of The Sunbearer Trials.
