RGYC News

Vale Tony Gage

It is with sadness that we inform members of the recent passing of Club Member Tony Gage. A 50 Year Platinum Member of 52 years. Tony joined RGYC in 1971. Tony will be deeply missed by the RGYC community.
Past Commodore Ron Earney & RGYC Member Jack Anderson Share Unique Bonds

In what must be a world first, our club is privileged to have two extremely long-term members with unique bonds.

RGYC’s longest serving member of 80.3 years, Past Commodore Ron Earney turns 98 years of age on Wednesday this week. Ron was born on 26 April 1925.

However, Ron is not our oldest member! That honour goes to Jack Anderson, a member for 72.2 years, who is one day older than Ron, and celebrates his 98th birthday tomorrow, ANZAC Day!!

Incredibly, Ron & Jack attended the same primary school and were in the same class!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ron & Jack!

On Friday evening the RGYC Foundation held its annual Get Together in the West Lounge. There were over sixty members and guests in attendance and they enjoyed food and drinks sponsored jointly by Will Baum of Discount Yachting and Paul Loughnan of European Affair. The Foundation is most grateful to Will and Paul for their generous sponsorship and we note that this is Paul’s third sponsorship of this event.

The Foundation is keen to hear from anyone who might step in and sponsor the event next year. Chair of Trustees, Jonathan Apted, spoke briefly before we opened the sliding doors to the main lounge so Foundation Members could be involved in the club Member draws and the Foundation meat raffle ably conducted (yet again) by Harry Farnell. Jon spoke with gratitude for Harry’s commitment to the Foundation, particularly in acting as Chair of Trustees for the past six years, including dealing with the difficulties associated with COVID and also being without an Honorary Secretary for a significant period. Jon also spoke of the excitement and momentum which he felt was developing as a result of Robbie Miller’s recently announced extremely generous bequest and he encouraged all to draw others into Membership of the Foundation.

April 14th was named as Annual Giving Day to mark the Date of the announcement of Robbie’s gift. There was a strong sense that the next two years would be important for the Foundation in that with some of the projects in front of us we ought to be able to attract considerable interest in the Foundation from those outside of the RGYC community. This was actually one of the Purposes identified at the time of establishment of the Foundation. Members were encouraged to make an annual contribution before 30th June and to consider the possibility of a bequest to the Foundation. Jon also extended a warm invitation to Members to get to the Annual General Meeting later in the year.

It was pleasing to see the level of camaraderie in the room over the evening and we look forward to similar events in the future.

Volunteer with Geelong Coastguard

Most of you will have seen the coastguard’s rescue boat which is based at the marina but have you ever wondered what they do?

The Geelong Coastguard provides a volunteer marine search & rescue service that extends from Corio Bay to Portarlington. We have provided a continuous service for the local community for more than 60 years.

We work closely with the water police and are often the first to respond to calls for assistance, with an average of around 80 assists a year for sail and motor craft.
It generally takes 12 months to qualify as a crew member which requires members to complete a range of courses that cover all aspects of seamanship including survival at sea, marine radio and even tying knots (you would be surprised how useful that is!) - all we ask for is 2 days a month (weekends & public holidays as well as and some on call availability when you’re qualified.

So if you’re looking for more time on the water, and who isn’t, we would love to hear from you!
