Steelmaking coal (SMC) is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. SMC is a Business Unit within the strongly aligned and supportive Bulk Commodities (Bulks) Division of Anglo American (AA).  Bulks has created the platform for an exciting future for SMC, including growth of our Tier 1 operations to meet the multi-decade robust demand for our high-quality products.   In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description

As the Occupational Hygiene Specialist you will be responsible for executing occupational hygiene processes, focused on the identification, measurement and progressive elimination of health risks in the workplace, while managing residual health risk as we journey to elimination.

The role will ensure compliance to the Operation’s annual occupational hygiene sampling plan and identify at risk exposure groups and work with relevant risk owners to develop and support the implementation of risk management strategies and exposure reduction plan/s to address gaps and risk areas.

With your extensive professional knowledge and highly developed interpersonal skills you will be able to contribute to a purpose-led, high-performing culture within the site safety and health function that is aligned with the company values, is inclusive and promotes diversity.  You will provide technical support and risk-based guidance to the operation with regards to the management of occupational health hazards and the systems and data used to manage these hazards.

We are recruiting for multiple Occupational Hygiene Specialists to join our operations across Central Queensland.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary Qualifications in a health-related discipline and or tertiary qualified in a relevant field (mandatory)
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role (mandatory)
  • Membership with AIOH will be highly regarded
  • A sound knowledge of Queensland legislative requirements as well as Australian Mining & Resources sector experience

Role-Specific Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience working in the field of occupational hygiene in mining industry, preferably Queensland coal mining
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health risk management principles and implementing continuous improvement
