Who Deserves Monuments?
This past Saturday morning was our last Roundtable Discussion for the current school year, and it was another lively and fun gathering of students from seven different high schools in the metropolitan area. It was also a "Book Club," with the first half of the morning dedicated to a discussion of We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammonds. Those who had read the book (which wasn't required to attend, of course!) had very insightful comments about the many themes presented in the Young Adult novel: family relationships, friendships, racial discrimination, sexual identity, living in the present, and more. When the opportunity came up to discuss astrology, an interest of one of the main characters in the novel, everyone had little regard for its authenticity. If Simone had been a fly on the wall...

Other topics of the morning included the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado; the Waco, Texas siege; and the Oklahoma City bombing, all tragic anniversaries last week. Despite the heavy content, we were able to part ways with optimism and anticipation for next year and more discussions, including the pros and cons of lowering the American voting age to 16!
Looking for an Additional Model UN experience?
Consider participating in the weekend-long Model UN experience sponsored by Washington University in the fall, September 29th-October 1. Participating in a General Assembly is just one of many options. Other committees and simulations, including historical and current issues facing the UN, are a part of the experience.
Ideally, your school will sign up to bring a delegation. If that's not possible, and you are interested in participating, contact Civitas about how to get involved.
2 Middle School General Assemblies This Week
Students at the April 21 Model UN General Assembly

Last week we had a high spirited Middle School Model UN Session #3 with Hixson Middle and St. Raphael the Archangel. (Click here for photos) This week we have more lessons in international diplomacy waiting for us with 2 sessions.

On Wednesday,  bright-eyed delegates from Brittany Woods and Grand Center Arts Academy will be trying to find solutions to child labor in Bangladesh, clean water access in Ethiopia, cleaning the garbage vortex in the Pacific Ocean, and more! (Check out their resolutions here)

Not to be outdone, on Thursday, the top notch team of ambassadors from
Maplewood Richmond Heights and Rogers Middle will convene to work on  lithium mining in South America, aid to South Sudan, and wildlife trafficking in Ecuador, along with some other topics. (Check out their resolutions here)

We thank the Saigh Foundation for its continued strong support of our Middle School Model UN program.
