Dear Neighbor,
Spring has officially sprung, and more people are partaking in their spring-cleaning efforts. With that, we also see blight popping up faster than spring lilies.
Please remember, we have the resources you need to help us fight the blight. I realize that many may not be comfortable using the “My East Hartford” platform to report any issues of concern online or via the app. That’s why we have established a new Quality of Life (QOL) phone line.
Please call 860-291-7765 to report concerns related to potholes, blight, property maintenance and other issues.
Help us help you. Help us fight the blight. Report issues of concern today.
-Mayor Michael P. Walsh |

| Reduced Fire Marshal Permit Fees
The Town of East Hartford is pleased to announce a reduction in the fire marshal permit fees effective April 19, 2023.
In keeping with Mayor Walsh’s efforts to promote that the Town of East Hartford is open for businesses and also consistent with 2023 focus – “Contractors, Cranes, and Construction”, this reduction will help launch our development projects that are both underway and on the drawing board. The East Hartford Town Council approved the new fee schedule at their public meeting on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
The cost of a Fire Marshal review for the first $1,000 of construction is now half of the previous $40 fee. There will be an additional savings of between $5 to $7 per $1,000 of estimated construction costs thereafter.

| | East Hartford Announces Town Roads Scheduled for Repair
The Town of East Hartford has identified over 60 local roads to be addressed during this season’s Road Improvement Program (RIP). As part of the Road Improvement Program (RIP), the town began rehabilitation and/or resurfacing of approximately 12.8 miles of roadway.
These roads were selected based on their overall condition and the need for repairs.
The town established its Road Improvement Program in 2003 to address the overall condition of the Town’s roadway network. East Hartford owns approximately 150 miles of roads. These town roads are maintained by the Department of Public Works. To date, the program has been funded by bond referendums approved by the voters in 8 referendum votes over the past 20 years.

East Hartford is one of six communities across the state participating in a project with the CT State Library and Libraries Without Borders to build trust and grow habits that ultimately help connect new users to permanent resources available through their local public library. Through their work, Libraries Without Borders assists people experiencing challenges caused by the digital divide, communities living in book deserts, and those who, for various reasons, do not feel comfortable accessing their local libraries.
To develop a plan for East Hartford, the first phase of the project is a community assessment, including a survey. The survey is offered in English and Spanish. | |

East Hartford Parks Spotlight Series |
Spring is on the way, which means sunny days in the parks are ahead. Did you know East Hartford has over 20 beautiful parks and active/passive recreational areas? In this series, each month we will be highlighting one of the many East Hartford’s Parks! |
BICENTENNIAL SQUARE |
|
Bicentennial Square is located the middle of East Hartford between Burnside Avenue and I84. The Square main feature is the War Memorial which host an event for all that fought for our country and did not come home on Memorial Day Weekend. Location: Bicentennial Square is located in the heart of East Hartford with frontage on three Roads, Scotland Rd., Forbes Street, and Hudson Street where the war memorial is located. From I84 – Exit 58 (Roberts Street): From I84W take a right onto Roberts Street and I84E take a left onto Roberts Street. Take a left onto the Forbes Street, that will quickly turn into Scotland Rd. Take a left onto Hudson Street, park will be on your left. From Burnside Avenue: Turn onto Scotland Rd. Takea Right onto Hudson Street, park will be on your left. From Sliver Lane: Turn North onto Forbes and travel over I84. Forbes Street, that will quickly turn into Scotland Rd. Take a left onto Hudson Street, park will be on your left.
Address: The park has a couple of addresses. The Memorial is located at 35Hudson Street and for GIS information, please use the address 172 Forbes Street Acres: 2.31
History: Bicentennial Square was built in 1983 in honor of the Town of East Hartford 200 birthday. Originally there was debate on what to do with the new park, including six 18th and 19th century structures. Eventually the Bicentennial Committee rejected that proposal and decided on a public green “a family oasis where families can go for a picnic or to relax” with flowers, shrubs, and a memorial for the 18 to 19 East Hartford residents that died in the Vietnam War. The memorial would be a Sugar Maple Tree planted foreach service man that died in the Vietnam War, a plaque on a boulder, a parkbench, and a flag pole. Also buried in the Square, a Time Capsule, a 4’ x 6’concrete vault scheduled to be open on October 9, 2083, marking the towns 300thbirthday.
Memorial: The War Memorial is located in the Northwest Corner of the park on Hudson Street. The war Memorial has four memorials; Operation Iraq Freedom, Korean Veterans Memorial two plaques honoring the East Hartford Residents that served from 1950– 1953 and the residents that gave their live during the Korean War, the Wallof Gratitude for the East Hartford residents that served in Desert Storm and Shield and helped heal the wounds of the Korean and Vietnam War Veterans and their families, and the last memorial is the Bicentennial Square dedication plaque honoring the eighteen East Hartford Vietnam War soldiers who gave their lives during the war. A Sugar Maple Tree was planted for each of the Vietnam Soldiers who gave their lives in Vietnam. Shortly after the park opened, the committee was notified by a family that there was a 19th resident that died in Vietnam during the war, he was added to the plaque. In the center of the Memorial is a flagpole that is lite at night as well as two benches.
There are two trees planted in the Square. The first is a Korean Pine dedicated to Thomas J. Dagon who was killed in action in 1952 in the Korean War and a EHHS graduate of the class of 1950. The pine is planted next to the Memorial. The second tree planted along the southern board (Forbes Street) is a White Oak planted in 2019 celebrating the 100th year of Connecticut Arborist Law.
Every Memorial Day, a ceremony honoring our veterans that died serving our country is held to honor and remember them. |

Are you recycling or “wish-cycling” |
Are you recycling or “wish-cycling”?
“Wish-cycling” is a term coined by the recycling sector. It means putting something in your recycling blue cart and hoping it will be recycled, even if there is little evidence to confirm this assumption. In other words, it is the belief that these objects will become new products rather than being buried in a landfill, burned, or dumped.
These objects are not recyclables in the waste single stream. Further, there cycling sector emphasizes that wish-cycling can be harmful. Unacceptable materials that are not recyclables make the sorting process more costly because it requires extra labor, damages sorting systems and equipment, and depresses an already fragile trading market.
As a Solid Waste Official, I have been conducting curbside recycling blue cart inspections to boost local recycling efforts. I have found a variety of objects or unacceptable materials considered wish-cycling. These items cannot be processed in the waste stream at the recycling facilities (see-attached flyers). Please consider donating them or reusing them if in good condition. If it cannot be donated or reused, put these objects in your trash.
Please be thoughtful about what you place in the blue cart: when in doubt, throw it out in your green trash cart. In other words, only place material that truly can be recycled in your blue cart.

Hepatitis Awareness Month
Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The liver is a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood, and fights infections. Although Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, and certain medical conditions can cause hepatitis, a virus often causes hepatitis. In the United States, the most common types of viral hepatitis are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.
Many people with hepatitis do not have symptoms and may not know they are infected which is why knowing your status and getting vaccinated are important. Symptoms occur with an acute infection, and then can appear anytime from 2 weeks to 6months after exposure. Symptoms of acute hepatitis can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc. Symptoms of chronic viral hepatitis can take decades to develop. You can protect yourself from getting an infection by knowing your status. Talk to your healthcare provider about getting tested and vaccinated. |

East Hartford, we want you to meet someone special.
Pictured here is a second-grader Jeanette, who just turned 8 years old last month. Jeanette is participating in the 2023 Miss Puerto Rico of Greater Hartford! She said she decided to participate in this cultural pageant because she thinks it would be fun. Mayor Mike met Janette and reassured her that East Hartford has her back! Here is what she said about her decision to participate in this cultural event: "What inspired me was my mom, she said I would learn about Puerto Rico and even said the town I represent has history where my great grandma participated in which was working for over 15 years in the largest Tuna Cannery in the World. (Starkist Caribe in Mayaguez PR). I think that’s pretty cool."
This cultural pageant is the longest running in Hartford and has been around for over 50 years. Jeanette will be dancing a traditional dance from Puerto Rican Dance (La Bomba) and demonstrate a traditional dress, representing her. The competition will be held on May 27.
Jeanette shared that she is full of emotions! She is very excited but getting very nervous! Recently, she did a presentation on her town and was voted as top of her category!
Join us in wishing Jeanette the best of luck and reassuring her that she does have the support of her community! #EHPride
