Message from the Board

Dear Gardner Community,

On Tuesday, April 18, 2023 the Board of Trustees met virtually and were joined by two guests from the community.

At the meeting, the Board of Trustees:

  • Finalized plans for the 2023 Auction and heard from the Development Committee about the last details. The amount of time, energy, and though that goes into an event like this is huge, and we appreciate all the volunteers who make it happen. Specific thanks to Vice-Chair Anamaria Bambaren Call for leading the process, and Trustee Susan Melton for all her contributions.

  • Reviewed and collaborated on the most recent version of the school’s DEI Initiative for the strategic plan led by our DEI Committee. Trustee Juna McDaid has led the group in discussing how Gardner can best serve students and families from underrepresented communities while strengthening the program for all students.

At our next meeting, the Board of Trustees will:

  • Review the Financial Resources initiative for the school’s strategic plan to understand the school's financial position and plan for the upcoming years.
  • Review next school year’s budget.

Many many thanks to all those who attended the auction, and who made this past weekend a standout experience.  Our community never ceases to impress with the dedication from our teachers, admin team, and families who come together to serve our students. Thank you for continuing to support the important work we do at Gardner School.

As always, if you are interested in learning more about our Board and its committees, please contact Emily Davis and Lori Cohen for further information.

With gratitude,

Lori Cohen, Board Chair

Anamaria Bambaren Call, Vice Chair

Peter Bryant, Secretary

Jaimie Eck, Treasurer

Juna Kim McDaid, Trustee

Sarah Grenert-Funk, Trustee

Susan Melton, Trustee

2023 Gardner Auction
What a wonderful evening!
Our 2023 Gardner Auction is in the books, and it was a terrific night of activities, laughter, and giving. Our community of alumni families, current families and business supporters participated in classes like candy sushi making, a Mad Hatter tea party, marshmallow building challenges, and more.

We couldn't do events like this without our volunteers and sponsors. Thank you to everyone who came out to set up tables, plan out the activities, pick up materials, etc. Additionally, thank you to our Platinum Sponsor Premier Global Logistics, Silver Sponsor OnPoint Community Credit Union, and Bronze Sponsors Waste Connections and Blairco Heating and Air Conditioning.

It's obvious when we come together for events like this how much Gardner School means to so many families, and the most heartwarming conversations were shared about why each of us supports Gardner School. Stay tuned for more photos and details about giving in an upcoming Growing Gardner newsletter!

Seen Around School

Yup, that's a horse skull!

Our Loowit students are learning about the body and brain, and how all the systems work together. Teacher Millie just happened to have a horse skull at home, and brought it to for the Loowit students to explore. It was quite the hit!
Parking Lot Safety Reminders

As the school year is in the final stretch, we often need to share reminders about parking lot safety. Please read below, and thank you for doing your part in keeping our students, staff, and parents safe.

Cautious Driving
Slowing Down and Being Aware

Please drive into, through, and out of our parking lot with the assumption there could be a child crossing at any point, or another car coming around the corner. This includes slowly pulling into and out of parking spaces. Even if you're running a little late, that extra 30 seconds is important for the safety of all.

Crosswalk Safety
Dropping Off and Picking Up Kids

We see many of our students safely waiting for their parents to escort them across the crosswalk, making eye contact with any drivers, and waiting until it is safe to move through the parking lot. Please remind students to only cross at the crosswalk, and to stay on the pathways and sidewalks.

Yearbook sales start now!
We have a wonderful collection of memories from this year in our upcoming yearbook, and you won't want to miss this keepsake for your child! You can find the link to purchase a yearbook for $35 on our website here.
Time for Spring Cleaning?
Bring in your used books!
Last year was the inagural Gardner Book Swap event, and looking ahead to next year we have plans to make it even bigger and better! If you're interested in being part of the planning committee for this event, please reach out to Courtney Tomlinson for more details.

We're also set up to collect books starting now! If you have books that you would like to pass along to the next person, please bring your bags or boxes to the Farmhouse and we'll start processing them.

Thanks for supporting Gardner in providing a more sustainable approach to promoting literacy!

Learning in Action

Robotics and Technology
Our use of technology in classes is very intentional at Gardner, and in our older grades, our students demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills using a variety of activities. This year in science our 5th and 6th graders have the opportunity to learn how to create their own robots using Hummingbird robotic kits. These kits come with a circuit board that holds the instructions they program into their robots. This circuit board also allows the students to attach various input and output (lights, sound, and motors) to their robots. They will learn how to program their robots to react to their environment and do something to show their reaction. This is just one of the ways students at Gardner get hands-on access to sophisticated learning tools!
