The Third Sunday of Easter

Christ appears to Mary Magdalen as a  Gardener  ( The National Library of Wales)

A message from Fr Ian Eglin

Gardens seem to feature a lot in the Bible. It was in a garden that Adam and Eve were placed to tend the garden. The Garden of Eden was a place of Paradise but it was in that garden that they disobeyed God.Jesus was arrested and betrayed in a garden, the garden of Gethsemane, and it was in a garden that he was buried. On the first Easter Day we read that it was in the garden that Jesus meets Mary Magdalen, the first person to witness that Jesus had risen from the dead. One word for garden in Greek is the word from which we get our word paradise. St John’s telling of the meeting in the garden is one of the most beautiful passages in the scripture. It  still excites me every time I read it.

St John tells us how Mary Magdalen goes to visit the tomb of Jesus and meets a man who she thinks is the gardener. He asks her “ for whom are you looking.”She thinks she recognises the voice but then  he uses her name and when he uses her name Mary, it is then that she realises it is the Lord. You can  sense the excitement in the passage.” I have seen the Lord” she says.

At Easter we celebrate the fact that each one of us has a place in God’s garden. It is through his resurrection that Jesus has put right what went wrong in the first garden, the garden of Eden. Here is a challenge then for us: God is inviting us to mend our ways, to live better lives with thought for others instead of just ourselves, and an invitation to follow him as a disciple. This is indeed good news.

Easter lasts for fifty days and it is a great joy and privilege to be able share the rest of the Easter season with everyone at Christchurch until 18 June. My wife Caroline and I feel a sense of homecoming, as we were with you last September and again for Advent and Christmas. We look forward to seeing you all again. So what have I been doing since I left Lausanne at the end of December? Tending my garden, a place of paradise!

Ukrainian Day Centre Anniversary Celebration

Dear Friends,

The Ukrainian Day Centre was started a year ago by three English-speaking churches in Lausanne. Volunteers from Our Lady of Faith, Christ Church and the Scots Kirk were helped greatly by a group of volunteers from the wider community. The help of several Ukrainian expatriates and several Ukrainians who had recently escaped the fighting in the Ukraine played a vital role in allowing the Centre to be launched quickly and effectively.

Since its launch, the Centre has registered over a thousand Ukrainians many of whom now visit regularly. Indeed, we have had over 3’000 visits, served at least 5,000 refreshments, distributed several tons of clothes, given several hundred language lessons and entertained hundreds of additional visitors at events including National Day celebrations and Christmas.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of our local and Ukrainian volunteers and the support of our founding congregations and donors.

It is therefore with great thanks that the President and coordinating team of Le centre du Jour ukrainien request the pleasure of your congregation’s company at a celebration of the first anniversary of the Centre’s founding on Sunday 23 April at 12.15 at the Scots Kirk, Av de Rumine 26, 1005 Lausanne.
