Expressions of interest Work Health and Safety Board (the Board) QLD
The Board is established under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (the WHS Act). The primary function of the Board is to give advice and make recommendations to the Minister about policies, strategies, allocation of resources, and legislative arrangements, for work health and safety.
The Board also reviews the effectiveness of the Industry Sector Standing Committees which are established under the WHS Act to advise the Board on health and safety matters across the six key industry sectors.
The Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Racing, the Honourable Grace Grace MP, makes appointments to the Board for a period of 3 years. The current term of the Board expires on 12 July 2023.
The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) is seeking nominations for the Minister’s consideration for appointment to limited positions available for persons representing employers and workers and for expert members.
The Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) hold considerable practical experience and competence surrounding the management of work health and safety and may be eligible for consideration as expert members to the Board. OIR would like to invite AIOH to distribute a call for nominations to its members.
OIR and the Queensland Government recognise the value that different perspectives contribute to decision-making bodies. OIR strongly encourages nominations from suitably qualified people who bring a diverse range of skills and perspectives. This includes women, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other diverse groups.
Additional information for AIOH members wishing to nominate is attached. Nominations must be submitted before Wednesday, 3 May 2023.
The Board consists of a chairperson and at least 6 other members representing workers and employers. In addition, there are limited expert member positions. The Minister must seek to appoint both men and women as members to the Board. Members are appointed for a term of not more than three years.
The Board must meet at least four times per year, with meetings typically lasting between four to eight hours. Members must also undertake pre-meeting reading, contribute at meetings and working parties, and will be encouraged to promote and attend relevant OIR events.
Eligible members are entitled to be remunerated for meeting attendance and may be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses.
Who should nominate and how?
Nominations are invited from persons with practical experience and competence in the management of work health and safety (WHS). Nominations will be considered by the Minister on a range of criteria, including WHS experience and competence, suitability to represent either workers or employers in industry and/or the possession of ‘expert’ WHS knowledge, skills and experience (e.g., relevant legal or academic fields).
