When the senior class of nursing students began the program in 2019 they didn't expect their time in nursing school to coincide with a world-wide pandemic that changed the landscape of healthcare as we know it, but that still seems to be the case. With half of the UP nursing students in off-campus clinical and half on a simulation lab track, UP students and faculty weigh in on how the current state of healthcare in Oregon has affected UP's School of Nursing Health Innovations. 

Shipstad Hall will not be operating during the 2023-2024 school year as it undergoes a series of renovations. The Beacon spoke with Director of Residence Life Andrew Weingarten and a Shipstad RA for their takes on the hall’s pause.

As spring semester comes to a close, the Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) have important decisions to make - elections, budgets and final votes on bills put extra pressure on the members of ASUP. But now, they won't have to do it alone. Meet the new ASUP advisor --- Elizabeth Parkman.

If you’ve lived in UP’s dorms, you’ve likely received a smile and a “hello” from Teresa Freemont. For the past 25 years, Freemont has been giving valuable life lessons and providing a comforting space for students as a member of UP’s housekeeping staff.

Every year, Mehling Hall resident assistants and students plan for their annual spring dance, a tradition they have been doing since most can remember. However, this year they are making way for a new tradition to be made: The Mehling Quinceañera.

Did you know UP has a museum? In a small room in the basement of Shipstad lives the university museum. The space is filled floor to ceiling with historical pieces representing the University's social, athletic, academic and religious history.

“The Moreau Center is the University of Portland’s arm reaching out to the Portland community.” Tyler Wagner and student workers in the Moreau Center continue to display their commitment to service and justice amidst staffing shortages.

We’re bursting at the seams waiting for We Wore That’s first-ever fashion show this Saturday. Featuring student-made designs and full denim ensembles, the show will raise awareness for sexual assault on April 22, 1-3 p.m. at The Commons Terrace.

Working out can be really intimidating. You may of think of power lifters yelling and dropping insanely heavy weights or influencers filming their whole workout routine. The gym doesn’t have to be an intimidating place, especially at UP.

Missing soccer season at UP? Come watch the annual Villa Maria Hall vs. Christie Hall soccer game this Sunday at 2 p.m. The Beacon caught up with the halls’ respective directors and a player to preview the match.

I found the love of my life at UP, senior Maria Smith writes. Her freshman year, Smith found "A Moment of Magic" which is a national nonprofit foundation. Four years later, this club has given her purpose in life and encourages others to join.

On Monday April 10, ASUP President Emma Fuller gave her final campus address to the UP community. She detailed her journey as a student leader and shared her gratitude to staff, faculty and her fellow ASUP members.

When you hear the words “food waste,” where does your mind take you? For freshman Cherisse Wong the problem with food insecurity starts from the moment we purchase food to the consumption of it. She asks, how much food are we wasting at UP?

For reporter Syndey Ganon, their journey of accepting their identity as a person with autism has been a struggle. However, one thing has helped this journey of acceptance: theater. They write, "Theater has given me a place to be myself."

When people think of self-hatred, they don't usually think narcissism goes hand in hand with it. In his recent opinion, Carlos Moreno-Vega argues that the relationship between covert narcissism and self-hatred are a lot closer than people think.

In the past year, the University of Portland has had its ups and downs in creating a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQ+ students on campus, writes Megan Meckey. For the past year Meckey has been working to improve LGBTQ+ resources on campus, and she shares some of the resources she found students were unaware of.
