How Do You Change Your Heart?

“Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.”

– Job 22:21-22

God sees our hearts, not outward appearances. Our heart is not what we feel, but what we  do despite how we feel. But what if you need to change your heart? It’s a process, and here’s an example from the world of athletics. It’s called progressive overload and it’s achieved through training. When I was in high school I could barely do a pull-up. Since I’ve been working out a lot lately, I can do 20 or 25, but major motivation is needed to complete the last two. Did you know that the world record for consecutive pull-ups is 651? Consider that even the guy who did 651 pull-ups started with only one. In his heart he decided to continue training. He did one pull-up, then another, then another. He did that enough times to do 651. He put in the effort!

Remember that big accomplishments are made of progressive overload, whether you’re writing a novel, singing a Broadway hit, leading a huge church, or developing a successful business. These achievements are  accomplished by a heart and mind that decides to put in the effort. Maybe you feel God is calling you to be a pastor, but you’re not sure you have what it takes. Can you pray with someone? Begin praying with others. You can also lead a small group Bible study.

Friend, change your heart by doing the little things so you can do the big things later. You can manage a small project or lead a volunteer group in the church! By doing a little, you will become a lot! Let the Holy Spirit assist you in progressive overload. Taking one step at a time will lead to confidence and success.

Prayer

Father, show me how to change my heart by taking one step at a time.

Reflection

Are you able to see that progressive overload leads to big achievements?
