I think the best stories
always end up
being about the people
rather than the event,
which is to say
character-driven."
Stephen King
Have you read The Maid by Nita Prose?

This book is a fantastic example of what it means to create a compelling character. This character, Molly, the maid, is so captivating. It's not the most original whodunnit in terms of the story. However, because the character is so well written, so compelling, so endearing, and so original in terms of voice, it makes the story that much more absorbing.

It's not the story that gets you with this book; it's Molly. It's her thought process, how she looks at the world, what she remembers. It's that her favorite restaurant is The Olive Garden and why and so much more.

It's the beautiful diversions from the story into Molly's cleaning routines, into why she loves being a maid, into her fantasies and dreams and hopes and longings and grief that keep us turning the page. Not the story.

I've said it so many times in my classes, I've written newsletter after newsletter after newsletter about it, and now I'm going to share it again:

"Voice creates character; character drives plot." ~~ Jack Grapes

If you read The Maid by Nita Prose, you will come to appreciate what it means to create a compelling character that drives your story.

Short and sweet. Read the book. Enjoy it. Tell me what you think.

If you are ready to let your character drive your story. I'm here to help!!!
