“While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father.”
Acts 1:4
In this week’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus is preparing to take his leave of the disciples. As the book of Acts tells it, the risen Jesus appeared to and spoke with the disciples over a period of 40 days prior to his ascension. In this verse, as he prepares to depart “out of their sight” (Acts 1:9), he gives them one last instruction.
Wait. Go back to Jerusalem, and wait. Wait for your baptism with the Holy Spirit. Wait for the promise of restoration to be fulfilled. Wait for the coming of the kingdom of God. Wait.
It reminds me of one of my favorite poems by the Welsh priest & poet R.S. Thomas — “Kneeling:”
Moments of great calm, Kneeling before an altar Of wood in a stone church In summer, waiting for the God To speak; the air a staircase For silence; the sun’s light Ringing me, as though I acted A great role. And the audiences Still ; all that close throng Of spirits waiting, as I, For the message. Prompt me, God; But not yet. When I speak, Though it be you who speak Through me, something is lost. The meaning is in the waiting.
The meaning is in the waiting: those words tantalize me. And they make me wonder about the disciples, in those days after Jesus’s ascension. What meaning did they find in the waiting? What meaning did Jesus want them to find? How do the moments when we are waiting for God shape and deepen our lives of faith? I wonder.
And I invite you, this week, to wonder with me. Have there been seasons or times of waiting in your life faith? What are you waiting for now, in your life of faith? What do those times of waiting feel like to you? And what kind of meaning have you found there?
I’d love to hear your insights, if you’re of a mind to share.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Andi

TCP is putting together a team of volunteers to participate in a fall build for Window Dressers in Castine! If you’re interested in being part of our team, please let Pastor Andi, Roberta, or Jimmy know!
Window Dressers is a volunteer organization that builds insulating window inserts to reduce heating costs and increase warmth for homes in our community. No skills are needed: training sessions will be provided in Belfast in August and October.
Food insecurity is a daily reality for many of our neighbors. One way to help is through donations of non-perishable food items. You can bring items to church on Sunday - or anytime the office is open - and leave donations in the baskets in the entryway. We'll deliver it to a local food pantry.
Thank you for your help!
INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING SUNDAY WORSHIP?
If you’re interested in providing flowers, or serving as an usher, or bringing coffee hour refreshments, or spending time in the Children’s Corner with the littlest members of our community, please visit the Sign-Up Genius:
or sign up on the clip-boards downstairs in the Vestry.
Participation is so rewarding,
so please sign up for any task that you'd like to take on!
The Board of Deacons encourages you to use Sign-Up Genius to volunteer! This makes it easy for the deacons to keep track of what our needs are from week to week - and makes it easy for you to remember what you've signed up for! Pastor Andi has put together a "how-to" sheet for sign-up genius. It's attached here, and there are hard copies near the sign-up clipboards in the Vestry. If you need help using Sign-Up Genius, Pastor Andi would be happy to show you how.
Weekly Bible Study
All are welcome to join an ecumenical Bible study, co-hosted by TCP and Trinity Episcopal Church, every Tuesday at 9 a.m. Each week, we read and discuss the texts for the upcoming Sunday - as appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary. The coming week's texts can be found above. (Wondering what the Revised Common Lectionary is? Read more here!)
This Bible study happens over Zoom, so folks can (and do!) join from far and near. Here’s the Zoom information, which will remain unchanged week to week.
If you or someone you know is in need of our prayers, either individually or during our time of congregational prayer in Sunday worship, please let Pastor Andi know, using her contact information below.
For non-emergency pastoral care needs or visits, please contact Andi by e-mail or telephone below, using the contact information below. For emergency pastoral care needs that arise outside of regular church hours, please call or text Andi on her cell phone: (802)-989-1448.
