Help Hope Live

Resilient Resources with Sonny Mullen

Join us this Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 6pET/3pPT for a Special Guest on HOPE Zoom. As part of our Resilient Resources series, Director of Outreach Sonny Mullen will explain how Help Hope Lives assists patients and their families personally raise funds for medical needs. We will dedicate the first part of HOPE Zoom to this discussion and a recording of this session will be available publicly in the coming weeks.

Afterwards, stick around for a brief HOPE Zoom conversation for those who want to check in; this part will not be recorded. Need a link? Click here.

PMP Pals 25-25-25 Challenge Grant

25-25-25 Fireworks & Confetti

In celebration of our 25th anniversary, a board member is challenging YOU to particpate in the PMP Pals 25-25-25. We’re on a journey to raise $25,000 by July 31, add 25 monthly donors, and inspire 25 first-timers to give. Charmaine says, “Start a Facebook or Instagram fundraisier this month and I will donate $25 to each Pals campaign, up to 100 fundraisers”

How to create a Facebook Fundraiser

Never done one before? Set up a Facebook or Instagram fundraiser easily by following the instructions above or the links here. If you need help, email us and we will call you and walk through it with you (because that’s what we do). Set your fundraiser to run through July 31. Then invite friends, family, and followers to support the Pals programs and services that YOU love, that help YOU live with appendix cancer and PMP. Giving to Pals ensures we’re here for you when you need us. Ready? Go!

Giving Back in Other Ways

Our community steps up in brilliant ways to help further research and understanding of appendix cancer and PMP. Some pioneer through clinical trials; others swab their DNA for data compilations. This week, Dr. Tamara Floyd at Allegheny Health Network (ANH) reached out for your help. Whether you are an AHN patient or not, she’d like your input in this survey. Caregivers and healthcare workers are invited to complete the survey, too. In her words:

I am a Surgery Fellow in PSM (Peritoneal Surface Malignancy) training for specialty in PMP, PSM, and HIPEC. In an effort to help improve nursing navigation to provide the best care possible for patients with PSM, we are performing a study through AHN which involves an anonymous and voluntary survey for patients… We would like to better understand your desires, wishes, and needs for nursing navigation. This survey will provide information to further develop, improve, and expand the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Programs Navigation and help future patients.

Here’s an outlet for you to be heard and share your first-hand perspective to improve the patient experience. Volunteer to complete the survey (roughly 10-15 minutes). Skip the questions you prefer not to answer. Responses will be used for research purposes only. And thanks for your help…

You Make Things Happen

Physician Presentation: Ask the Expert Shannon Alpeter, Certified Physician Assistant, UPMC

At 25, we’re just hitting our stride. Live Ask the Expert interviews - like the one above with Shannon Alpeter, PA at UPMC - are just a sparkle of what’s to come in the next 25. But we need your help to make things happen.

Programs like Physician Presentations (and the archived videos), MeetUp 2023, Get Well & More Cards, and Bare Bottom Bears are alive and well because of your generosity. By becoming a monthly donor in 2023 at $10 (or more), you ensure PMP Pals will be here over the long haul, for you and others facing similar diagnoses. Together, we establish personal emotional resilience by connecting with each other: online, by mail, and in person.

Make things happen today and sign on as one of 25 monthly supporters celebrating our 25th anniversary!

One More Thing

Can you explain to me in simple language?

You know that feeling when your doctor says something intense and “undigestable”. Blood rushes from your brain. You nod aimlessly, while you wonder “Huh?”

On the cream-state, slow-walk out of the office, you regain consciousness and think,

“What the @#*& just happened?”

“What did that mean?”

“That made no sense.”

“I need a better explanation of that.”

Whenever possible, get the answer you need directly from your medical team. We also encourage you to continue asking questions, especially the hard questions, until you feel comfortable with the explanation.

If you are still flumixed, send us your Do Over question, second-ask, or confused befuddlement; we’ll reach out to our medical community and ask a professional for a quick explanation on video to explain in simple language. So, let’s get that answer - together!
